Allegheny General's 6A Stepdown Unit is a 30-bed unit specializing in the care of ICU stepdown patients and complex medical cases. It primarily serves as a receiving unit for patients stepping down from MICU, but also admits patients from the Emergency Department, outside hospitals, and smaller ICUs requiring a higher level of care for stabilization. The unit frequently cares for patients with respiratory issues (with respiratory therapy available on the floor), drug and alcohol withdrawal, GI bleeds, altered mental status, sepsis, and congestive heart failure (CHF). Nurses manage a high-acuity patient population requiring frequent blood product administration, intravenous access, and close monitoring. AGH is a Level I Shock Trauma Center with 5 state-of-the-art ICUs, a state-of-the-art Cancer Center, and over 550 beds. AHN is a 9-hospital system, part of Highmark Health, committed to transforming healthcare by providing highly effective services. AHN is dedicated to being inclusive, valuing fresh perspectives, and offering growth and educational opportunities.
