About The Position

Fort HealthCare is a patient-centered hospital and healthcare system serving individuals, businesses and families in Jefferson, Dane, and Walworth Counties. The Risk Management Specialist is responsible for identifying, assessing, mitigating, and monitoring organizational risks that may affect patient safety, regulatory compliance, financial performance, staff safety, and the quality of healthcare services. This role partners with clinical, operational, legal, compliance, quality, and executive teams to develop effective risk-management strategies and promote a culture of safety and continuous improvement.

Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required
Minimum 5 years clinical experience required
Interacts professionally with organizational leaders, physicians, nursing team, Fort HealthCare staff, and external medical facilities or partners
Proficiency with Electronic Health Record systems and incident reporting systems
Strong computer skills, including proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office products & other software programs
Current WI RN License required

Nice To Haves

Experience in healthcare risk management preferred
Proficiency in claims reporting and management preferred
Proficiency in healthcare risk management or quality preferred
Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) or eligibility or within 2 years of hire

Responsibilities

Identifies, tracks, and analyzes critical risks, trends, and potential liability exposure across the health system using event reports, patient and family complaints, claims information, and other available resources and data.
Provides oversight to Clarity event report investigations.
Collaborates with Quality, Compliance, and clinical leadership teams throughout investigations, follows up with pertinent leaders and staff, and evaluates potential liability exposure.
Investigates Sentinel and Serious Reportable Events and completes Root & Action Cause Analyses.
Works with patients, families, staff, and providers after adverse events to maintain communication & transparency.
Acts a liaison for staff and provider legal requests and subpoenas.
Facilitates communications with attorneys and legal counsel.
Recommends, develops, implements, evaluates, and monitors risk management and mitigation strategies & policies to improve patient safety and reduce liability exposure.
Stays current with applicable laws, regulations, and best practices and regularly conducts risk assessments to identify compliance vulnerabilities.
Assists clinical and operational leadership with proactive risk assessments and collaborates on risk management strategies under the direction of the Director of Quality and Risk Management.
Promotes a culture of safety through collaboration, education, consultation, and support for clinical and operational staff.
Participates in committees and processes improvement initiatives as appropriate.
Develops and delivers risk management education, including documentation standards and disclosure practices, and serves as a resource to staff as related issues arise.
Prepares investigation summaries and potential claim evaluation reports as directed by the Director of Quality and Risk Management.
Prepares dashboards, reports, and presentations for leadership and committees, as requested.
Assists the VP of Nursing / CNO, Director of Quality and Risk Management, and legal counsel with professional and general liability claims by serving as a liaison with insurance carriers and claim managers, coordinating preservation and collection of documentation for active and potential litigation, and maintaining accurate claim files.
