About The Position

The Right-of-Way Operator I position is a full-time role within the Operations Department, located in Summerdale, AL. This role is crucial for maintaining the Cooperative’s electric utility right-of-way to ensure system reliability and safety. The operator will be responsible for clearing vegetation using various tools and operating heavy equipment. The position requires obtaining a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 90 days of employment and involves working outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Position requires obtaining a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 90 days of employment.
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment and materials.
  • Possess knowledge of and ability to use and maintain applicable Operations Department equipment, tools, and materials such as chainsaws and chippers.
  • Must be knowledgeable and have experience using chemicals for vegetation.
  • Ability to use self-rescue devices and complete training.
  • Must be able to read and decipher maps to determine right-of-way.
  • Proficient computer skills with software applications (Windows, Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Must possess good communication skills and the ability to communicate professionally, effectively, clearly, and pleasantly – both orally and in written form.

Responsibilities

  • Utilizes hand tools and power tools, including chainsaws and handsaws, to cut, trim, and clear vegetation within the Cooperative’s electric utility right-of-way in support of system reliability and safety.
  • Operates heavy equipment, including but not limited to loader trucks, chipper trucks, and chippers, in accordance with training, manufacturer guidelines, and Cooperative safety requirements.
  • Cuts, removes, and hauls dead, damaged, or hazardous trees from the utility right-of-way and areas adjacent to overhead power lines.
  • Trims and clears vegetation from members’ service wires following completion of the Electric Hazard Awareness Program (EHAP), often working at extended heights.
  • Inspects assigned trucks, tools, equipment, personal protective equipment (PPE), and first aid kits to ensure proper working condition, compliance with safety requirements, and valid expiration dates.
  • Achieves and maintains all requirements outlined in the ROW Operator I progression checklist, including required training, certifications, and demonstrated competencies.
