National Park Service•San Francisco, CA
•Onsite

About The Position

The Rigging Worker works on an operating traditionally rigged, square-rigged sailing vessel for the Seasonal Staffing Office at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period is April–May 2027, but timing may vary due to weather, project needs, or funding. This is a temporary seasonal appointment, generally not to exceed 1,039 hours, though it may be filled for up to 1,560 hours depending on the park and program. The appointment is expected to end when the season’s work is complete and may be terminated earlier for funding, project, performance, or other reasons. The work involves going aloft; rigging and handling sails; striking yards and topmasts to deck and sending them aloft; and working the capstan. The worker strikes and rigs blocks and running rigging, tensions standing rigging, and repairs or makes running and standing rigging using traditional techniques such as worming, parcelling, serving, splicing, seizing, and tarring. The position requires frequent heavy physical effort, including lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling objects up to 100 pounds, and heavier loads with assistance. Work may involve using full body weight to load tag lines or move suspended loads. The worker uses and works around power equipment and works in confined spaces and on decks, masts, yards, booms, scaffolds, ladders, and boatswain chairs. The worker must independently climb as high as 150 feet aloft, where footing may be slippery or unstable and working positions may be awkward or uncomfortable. Work takes place indoors and outdoors in all types of weather, usually on or around historic ships and museum docks in public view. Care is required when using tools and equipment to prevent serious accidents. Work may involve varying days and hours, shift work, on-call work, evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime. Operating a motor vehicle may be required as part of the duties. The employee must wear the prescribed maintenance uniform and required safety equipment; a uniform allowance will be provided. Government housing may be available but is not guaranteed.
