About The Position

Hutco, Inc. is seeking experienced Riggers to support shipyard operations at a Norfolk Naval location. Riggers play a critical role in the safe movement, handling, and positioning of ship components, heavy machinery, structural materials, equipment, and other materials used throughout shipbuilding and repair operations. Riggers may work with cranes, forklifts, tugboats, scaffolding, rigging equipment, and shipboard ventilation systems. Candidates must be able to safely determine load requirements and select the appropriate rigging equipment for assigned operations.

Requirements

• Minimum 2 years of experience required.
• Must be able to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb.
• Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs.
• Must be able to work at extreme heights and in confined spaces.
• Must be able to take and pass a respirator fit test.
• Must be able to pass the required Physical Agility Test.
• Must be able to work assigned shifts based on production needs.
• Must be able to report to the required Norfolk Naval location.
• Must be able to complete the DBIDS application process based on client requirements.
• Effective May 14, 2026, candidates are required to possess either a REAL ID or Passport.

Responsibilities

• Operate or work with shipyard cranes, forklifts, and other material-handling equipment.
• Support tugboat operations involving the movement of ships between dry docks and piers and the mooring of ships at piers and outfitting berths.
• Rig, lift, move, manipulate, and position ship components including piping, valves, pumps, motors, electronic equipment, machinery, and structural components.
• Calculate or determine the weight and center of gravity of loads being handled.
• Determine the capacity of applicable lift points.
• Calculate angles imposed on handling gear.
• Select the appropriate rigging gear for assigned lifting and material-handling operations.
• Erect, maintain, and dismantle various types of scaffolding.
• Support the handling, maintenance, and issuing of tools used in shipbuilding operations.
• Install and maintain various types of shipboard ventilation equipment.
• Perform work at extreme heights and in small or confined spaces as required.
