About The Position

The University of Massachusetts Amherst Department of Biomedical Engineering seeks a senior scholar for the Riccio Endowed Chair. The position spans the full scope of biomedical engineering. The successful candidate will build an externally funded research program and internationally recognized scholarly presence, contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching, mentor students and junior faculty, and provide service to the department, College, University, and broader field. Leading large, multi-investigator or center-level initiatives is an ideal part of the role. The candidate may develop new curricula, including courses supporting the department’s 2027 academic program. The department values collegiality, collaboration, achievement, integrity, and effective engagement in a diverse faculty and student community. It encourages applications from candidates committed to mentoring under-represented demographics in engineering and welcomes non-traditional career paths, career pauses, and experience outside academia. The Department of Biomedical Engineering has 15 full-time tenure-track faculty, 3 lecturers, approximately 60 graduate students, and 360 undergraduates. Work is performed in a laboratory or healthcare setting and may involve exposure to chemicals or infectious diseases, extended standing, and protective gear. This is a full-time academic-year position with a schedule that varies according to teaching, research, and service. The University’s approximate salary range is $177,900 to $288,900; exceptional candidates may be hired above the range. The position is subject to final budgetary and administrative approval.
