RF Design Engineer | Kilby Labs

Texas Instruments•Dallas, TX
•$128,000 - $192,000

About The Position

Kilby Labs, an advanced research and product development support organization within Texas Instruments, develops innovative intellectual property in collaboration with business units and customers. The RF Design Engineer will develop circuits and systems for wireless, RF, and mm-wave technologies for industrial, automotive, and communications applications. The role involves approaching new and existing problems from innovative perspectives and taking on different aspects of projects as needed, including system engineering, project planning, design, and post-silicon validation. The engineer will lead RF, SerDes, and mm-wave IC projects from definition through validation; architect, design, simulate, and guide layout of RF and analog IP; define characterization strategies; and guide PCB development. The role includes characterizing ICs for RF and system-level performance using probed or packaged measurements, benchmarking competitors and tracking research, balancing innovation with timely silicon demonstration, and collaborating with Process, Packaging, business-unit partners, and Kilby colleagues. The engineer will also support technology transfer and productization and serve as an industry liaison for university RF research projects.

Requirements

  • Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, ECE, or a related field and at least 1 year of experience; alternatively, a master's degree and at least 3 years of experience.
  • Hands-on experience in RF, radio, radar, or SerDes design.
  • Understanding of and experience with RF design, including small- and large-signal simulations and electromagnetic modeling.
  • Proven track record as a strong team player.

Nice To Haves

  • Expertise in clocking circuits, including frequency synthesizers (PLLs) and clock distribution techniques for RF, SerDes, or mm-wave applications.
  • Experience with CMOS, SiGe HBT, and III-V technologies.
  • Hands-on experience characterizing and debugging RF circuits and systems, including de-embedding methods and RF instrumentation.
  • Strong time-management skills that support on-time project delivery.
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong, influential relationships.
  • Good listening skills and excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Lead RF, SerDes, and mm-wave IC design projects from definition through validation.
  • Architect and design RF and analog IP, run simulations, and guide layout.
  • Define characterization strategies and guide PCB development.
  • Characterize ICs for RF and system-level performance using probed or packaged measurements.
  • Benchmark competitors and track research in RF, wireless, wireline, and mm-wave systems.
  • Balance innovation with execution to demonstrate IP in silicon in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with Process, Packaging, business-unit partners, and other Kilby team members.
  • Support technology transfer and productization of the team's innovative IP.
  • Serve as an industry champion and liaison for university research projects related to RF technologies.
  • Take on project work as needed, which may include system engineering, project planning, design, and post-silicon validation.
