About The Position

The North Carolina Department of Revenue is seeking skilled accounting professionals for the role of Revenue Field Auditor. This position involves conducting independent examinations of financial records for taxpayers with unique or special audit features, or anticipated accounting, tax law, or investigative problems. The auditor will review and audit all tax schedules administered by the Department to ensure compliance with statutes and make appropriate adjustments based on available accounting records. This role requires maintaining an audit plan, selecting audit candidates, scheduling taxpayer interviews, reviewing records, and preparing audit reports. The position involves using resourcefulness and good judgment to identify non-compliant taxpayers and select audits that are likely to generate additional tax revenue. This work is performed independently with minimal management oversight. The role requires regular travel to taxpayer locations within an assigned territory and occasional overnight travel. Access to reliable transportation and a valid driver's license is mandatory.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of the Internal Revenue Code and State Tax Laws across multiple schedules
  • Basic proficiency with spreadsheet and word processing software
  • Basic knowledge of auditing and accounting principles and practices
  • Effective analytical skills that would be helpful with investigation of complex tax compliance issues
  • Access to reliable transportation
  • A valid driver's license
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, economics, accounting or related field with at least eighteen semester hours of accounting from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A transcript (either official or unofficial) must accompany the application to verify completion of the required eighteen accounting hours.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent examinations of financial records of taxpayers that have unique or special audit features or anticipated accounting, tax law, or investigative problems.
  • Review and audit all tax schedules administered by the Department to ensure they are in compliance with the statutes.
  • Make appropriate adjustments based on the accounting records available.
  • Maintain an audit plan, which includes simultaneously selecting audit candidates, scheduling taxpayer interviews, reviewing provided records, and preparing and submitting audit reports for timely review.
  • Utilize resourcefulness and good judgment to select taxpayers that appear not to be in compliance with state tax laws and select taxpayers for audit where adjustments generate additional tax revenues.
