About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Revenue Collector, performs technical and clerical administrative work in the billing, collecting, and crediting of taxes and sewer charges, and other related billings or charges as applicable. This is a full-time position with the Revenue Department, working Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., totaling 37.5 hours per week. The role is eligible for all full-time benefits with the Town, including medical, dental, pension, paid leave, and paid holidays.

Requirements

  • Strong math ability with knowledge of bookkeeping, record keeping and basic accounting procedures.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations.
  • Possess strong customer service skills, enabling them to relate positively to staff members and the general public.
  • Ability to handle a large volume of telephone or in person inquiries.
  • Ability to work in fast paced office environment.
  • Ability to operate office and computer equipment.
  • Dexterity to count large amounts of currency.
  • High school diploma or equivalent with course work in bookkeeping or accounting.
  • Two (2) years responsible clerical bookkeeping experience.
  • Equivalent combination of education and qualifying experience substituted on a year for year basis.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Connecticut tax billing software preferred.
  • Certified Connecticut Municipal Collector within five years of hire, encouraged.
  • Notary public within one (1) year of hire, encouraged.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains financial and non-financial records including the crediting of payments for both tax and utility accounts.
  • Balances monies collected on a daily basis and prepares reconciliation information and deposits.
  • Verifies and balances interdepartmental revenues and prepares deposits.
  • Enters data for both payments and general account information.
  • Prepares correspondence to taxpayers and assists in arranging payment plans under the direction of the Revenue Collector.
  • Monitors accounts for delinquency and processes customer refunds for overpayment.
  • Notifies collection agency of changes in account status.
  • Assists in all phases of monthly balancing and the generation of various reports and prepares statistical reports.
  • Provides information in person and via telephone to attorneys, title searchers, banking officials, and the general public.
  • Provides notary services.
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • Maintains confidentiality of records and information as appropriate.
  • Observes safe work practices.
  • Represents the Town in a professional and courteous manner at all times.
  • Regularly attends and is punctual for work.
