The Illinois Department of Revenue is hiring two (2) Revenue Audit Supervisors for their Sales Tax Discovery Section in Springfield, IL. This role involves supervising and reviewing the activities of Revenue Auditors, providing guidance, instruction, and resolution. Requirements

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree.
  • Requires successful completion of fifteen semester hours of academically progressive coursework in accounting including at minimum: two introductory accounting courses, two intermediate accounting courses, one course in taxation or audit.
  • Requires two years professional experience as a Revenue Auditor III.
  • Requires 4 years of experience working with Sales and Miscellaneous Tax auditing processes and utilizing GenTax for audit purposes.
  • Requires 2 years of experience in a coach and/or mentor role as a Revenue Auditor III.
  • Requires the ability to successfully complete a tax compliance and fingerprint-based background check.
  • Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate.
  • Requires appropriate, valid driver’s license.
  • Requires the ability to use and secure a state-issued mobile device, e.g., cellular phone, laptop computer, tablet, etc.
  • This position is considered heavy work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(d)). Heavy work involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Certain provisions of the revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45 apply to this position.
  • This position has been found to meet the requirements in section 4A-101 of the Illinois Governmental Ethics Act requiring the occupant/employee to file a Statement of Economic Interest.
  • All employees required to file a Statement of Economic Interest are also required to file the Supplemental Statement of Economic Interest with the Executive Ethics Commission.

Nice To Haves

  • Requires a bachelor’s or higher degree in Accounting or a Certified Public Accountant certification.
  • Four (4) years of experience working with Sales and Miscellaneous Tax auditing processes, i.e., reviewing tax records, conducting tax audits of businesses, interpreting and explaining the proper application of sales and miscellaneous tax laws, rules, regulations, legal opinions, etc.
  • Four (4) years of experience using GenTax or similar tax processing system for audit purposes.
  • Two (2) years of experience working as a lead/advanced auditor in a coach/mentor role to lower-level auditors in an organization.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and review the activities of Revenue Auditors, providing guidance, instruction, and resolution.
  • Plan, direct, supervise, and review the activities of a staff of Auditors engaged in performing field audits of Illinois and/or out-of-state taxpayers subject to one or more taxes administered by the Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR).
  • Interpret and explain the proper application of sales and miscellaneous tax laws, rules, regulations, and opinions.
  • Serve as a working supervisor.
  • Make pre-audit evaluations to establish suitability of case to Auditor skill level, scope, and procedures to be employed.
  • Conduct post-audit conferences with peers and/or their staff of auditors, via telephone or by traveling to a District Office or place of business, explaining audit findings predicated on applicable tax laws, rules, regulations, court decisions, and precedents.
  • Confer by telephone or, as necessary, travel to taxpayer’s place of business to discuss and resolve technical or controversial tax issues with taxpayers and/or their representatives.
  • Confer with manager to provide information as to the status of ongoing audits or obtain guidance in resolving controversial or complex legal and/or technical tax problems.
  • Review and approve completed computerized audit reports.
  • Provide continuous communication and feedback to staff regarding performance, completing timely reviews and annual evaluations which clearly reflect the employee’s accomplishments and contributions, as well as shortcomings.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
