Restorative Certified Nursing Assistant
About The Position
Performs routine non-professional tasks in support of nursing service in the County hospital’s Extended Care Facility. The work involves routine patient care, minor personal services, and indirect or non-nursing services that do not need to be performed by a Licensed Practical or Registered Professional Nurse. The position also performs specialized restorative nursing program procedures assigned by supervisors. Work is generally subject to supervision, with actual patient care performed under the direct supervision of the registered nurse in charge of the patient. The position reports directly to the Director of Nursing, does not directly supervise others, and provides one-to-one support and serves as a resource to other CNAs in restorative nursing measures.
Requirements
- Current valid Nursing Assistant certification issued by the New York State Department of Health.
- Completion of specialized training for a restorative nursing program.
- Ability to understand and follow routine non-technical oral and written directions related to patient care.
- Physical strength, mental alertness, and physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
- Willingness to cooperate and carefully follow prescribed routines.
- Discretion, tact, and good judgment.
- Ability to get along with others and secure patients’ cooperation.
- Interest in hospital work; neatness and good appearance.
- Special interest in older adults and others requiring long-term care.
- Sufficient written and verbal communication skills to understand instructions and complete basic charting.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Responsibilities
- Provide skin preventive care.
- Assist patients with walking, feeding, bathing, toileting, and personal needs according to the Care Plan.
- Assist with lifting and turning heavy or helpless patients.
- Gather information about patient conditions and enter reports in patient records.
- Label and store patients’ clothing and turn valuables over to the person designated by the hospital.
- Help maintain room furniture, fixtures, and supplies to keep patients safe and comfortable.
- Pass nourishments.
- Practice safe patient handling and use mechanical lifts and equipment appropriately.
- Carry out restorative nursing assignments from supervisors, often involving residents discharged from formal therapy with specific therapist orders.
- Attend therapy training sessions, demonstrate and explain program carryover, and learn new skills.
- Perform all modalities in the Restorative Nursing Program effectively.
- Work with small group classes under the direction of the Director of Nursing.
- Follow nursing-administration protocols and procedures for restorative nursing care.
- Attend weekly Restorative Nursing Program review meetings prepared.
- Coordinate the restorative dining program.
- Inform the charge nurse of suggested changes to improve resident care and help residents reach their highest possible functioning level.
- Check residents’ wheelchairs regularly for needs, appropriate fit, and condition; report needed repairs to plant operations.
- Report malfunctioning equipment and inadequate supplies promptly.
- Document resident progress as directed and complete daily flow sheets indicating that specified restorative measures were performed.
- Assist the supervisor with orientation and staff development on restorative nursing principles and practices.
- Work as a team member, with the nurse leading the team.
- Keep the nurse informed of problems that interfere with assigned work, such as resident refusal.
- Help the supervisor maintain current restorative approaches and alert the nurse and supervisor when measures need to be added to the care plan.
- Deal courteously and patiently with residents, family members, coworkers, visitors, and physicians.
