About The Position

The Department of Public Health’s Tewksbury Hospital is seeking an experienced Respiratory Therapy professional to serve as a Respiratory Therapy Supervisor. Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer, the supervisor will lead Respiratory Therapy Technician I and II staff and play an essential role in staffing, quality improvement, performance management, education, and effective use of departmental resources. The Respiratory Therapy Supervisor will support staff development, coordinate education and orientation, analyze departmental data, participate in committees and quality initiatives, and help advance safe, effective respiratory care across medical and locked psychiatric units.

Requirements

  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees, patients and families.
  • Working knowledge of Respiratory Therapy practices, principles and equipment.
  • Working knowledge of PAP devices and associated equipment.
  • Working knowledge of ECG monitoring.
  • A current and valid license as a Respiratory Therapist issued by the Massachusetts Board of Respiratory Care.
  • At least two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in respiratory treatment and/or respiratory therapy in a hospital, clinic or medical facility.
  • At least one year of supervisory experience.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care or any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

  • Knowledge of the principles of general chemistry, bacteriology and microbiology.
  • Ability to interpret laboratory test results relative to microbiology.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes and supervises the activities of the Respiratory Care Department to ensure compliance with hospital policies and procedures, standard practices of the profession and applicable federal, state and Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) regulations; plans and directs performance improvement/quality assurance activities of the Respiratory Care Department.
  • Oversees the scheduling and staffing activities necessary to the operation of the Respiratory Care Department.
  • Assesses the performance of Respiratory Care Technician Level I-II staff and provides feedback on the quality of care being provided and to provide an opportunity to gain additional knowledge and skills; evaluates work performance to enhance abilities and provides suggestions for improvement and educates staff on the specific duties and services required and the implementation of such.
  • Analyzes statistical data such as reports on census, acuity, personnel changes, productivity, accidents and attendance in order to recommend action concerning patient census, deployment of personnel and effective use of available resources.
  • Examines medical and other records relative to utilization reviews to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and JCAHO regulations, as well as professional standards of care and practice; inspects physical facilities to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and JCAHO regulations.
  • Coordinates and may provide orientation and in-service education to Respiratory Therapy Technician Level I-II and other nursing and medical staff to obtain and exchange information, to enhance job skills and overall knowledge and to stay abreast of new procedures, techniques and guidelines in the medical field.
  • Serves as a member of special committees or teams, as necessary to ensure proper use of respiratory care procedures and treatments; stays abreast of respiratory therapy care and healthcare standards and regulations to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies.
  • Performs related duties as required including duties of staff therapist on the medical and locked psychiatric units.
