About The Position

Working under the supervision and guidance of a Respiratory Therapist, the Respiratory Therapy Extern assesses, treats, and cares for patients with pulmonary disease processes or respiratory care orders. The role primarily provides non-invasive respiratory care modalities, maintains patient records, and operates respiratory care equipment.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in a state-approved respiratory care program.
• Completed one semester of clinical practicum.

Responsibilities

• Set up and operate therapeutic gas administration, aerosol generators, and disposable medical products according to treatment parameters.
• Provide emergency care, including artificial ventilation, external cardiac massage, and assistance with cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
• Evaluate treatment requirements, including type, mode, and duration of therapy, universal precautions, medication, and dosage, in accordance with physician orders.
• Monitor physiological responses to therapy, including vital signs, pulse oximetry, and auscultation, and consult the preceptor and/or shift supervisor about changes in patient status.
• Read prescriptions and review patient information to assess the patient's condition.
• Work with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to manage patient care, enforce safety rules, and ensure adherence to physician orders.
• Maintain patient records and operate respiratory care equipment.
