About The Position

Provides appropriate respiratory care therapies specific to the neonatal and pediatric population in accordance with the hospital policy/procedure. Assesses, plans and implements appropriate respiratory plan of care based on the cardiopulmonary needs of the patients. Evaluates effectiveness of plan of care and recommends revisions to the multidisciplinary care team.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree from an accredited AMA approved school of respiratory care, accredited by the National Board of Respiratory Care Required
  • Health Services\RCP - Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner current and valid in the state of Nebraska Upon Hire Required
  • Basic Life Support from the American Heart Association Upon Hire Required
  • Health Services\RRT - Registered Respiratory Therapist Upon Hire Required
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support Upon Hire Required
  • Demonstrates competency in technical skills related to the Respiratory Therapy department.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree from an AMA approved accredited school in respiratory care Preferred
  • Minimum 1 year experience in respiratory therapy Preferred
  • Experience working with neonatal and or pediatric patients Preferred
  • Current and valid National Registered Neonatal/Pediatric Respiratory Therapist (RRT-NPS) credential within three years of hire Required

Responsibilities

  • Obtains and maintains respiratory skills
  • Demonstrates clinical competence in administrating respiratory care
  • Assemble, calibrate and operates respiratory equipment to include not limited to mechanical ventilators, nebulizers, inhalers, chest physiotherapy devices, intrapulmonary devices, transcutaneous monitors, pulse oximetry, oxygen delivery systems, laryngoscope, bronchoscope and multiple disposable respiratory devices to deliver respiratory care to patients.
  • Administer therapeutic medical gases with appropriate devices per Provider order or protocol/pathway or standards of practice to include; medical Oxygen, Air, Heliox, Nitric Oxide.
  • Provide emergency care to patients per (policy/procedures).
  • Uses appropriate resources (policy/procedures, supervisor) when unsure of skill/task to be performed or analyzing patient responses.
  • Documentation reflects accurate assessment/evaluation, modification and patient's response to therapy, changes in condition and therapeutic interventions/procedures.
  • Entries in the electronic medical record follow hospital policy (i.e., date, time, use of appropriate abbreviations and legibility).
  • Documentation is completed with established timeframes including, but not limited to the following in the electronic medical record to include medication administration record.
  • Provides precepting, orientation and evaluation of newly hired Respiratory Therapist following department orientation standards and policies.
  • Provides precepting and orientation of other internal team members not limited to those seeking respiratory care practices such as RN, transport team RN, emergency department RN, pulmonary resident, medical student other providers.
  • Provides shadowing experiences for high school students and or college students to show opportunities in the respiratory therapy profession and the Children's Nebraska organization.
  • Participation in career, student and other professional opportunities to showcase the profession.
  • Other duties may also include Clinical Instructor (schedule dependent on the contract with Respiratory Therapy schools): Supervise contracted Respiratory Therapy (RT) students from specified schools in the clinical hospital setting. Orients RT students to their role in the hospital, which includes scope of service, policies and procedures, patient safety, and professionalism. Orients RT students to the equipment used by RT at Children’s. Provides opportunities for directly supervised hands on learning in the clinical setting. Responsible for accurate completion and documentation of all Respiratory Therapy performed with RT students. Responsible for accurate “Hand off” of patient information and ordered Respiratory Therapy performed with RT students.
