The Respiratory Therapist provides direct patient care by assessing, treating, and managing patients with respiratory disorders. The role includes assessing respiratory status, implementing treatment plans involving oxygen, ventilation, and airway management, educating patients and families, documenting interventions, and collaborating with physicians and other medical staff. The therapist uses clinical judgment to assess and reassess patients, communicate their respiratory needs and status, and respond appropriately to critical or changing situations. The position uses and maintains respiratory equipment, including calibrating blood gas machines and performing quality-control measures, setting up ventilatory support systems, and keeping equipment clean and in working order. It also performs diagnostic procedures within the Respiratory Department’s scope of practice, including arterial blood gas draws and analysis, pulmonary bedside screening, and EKGs in patient-focused care units. Pulmonary function testing is performed or learned through training, and the therapist assists with therapeutic and diagnostic bronchoscopies as required. The therapist follows department policies and procedures, evaluates their own performance, attends at least 80% of annual staff development meetings, supports coworkers, and participates in department committees or task forces. The position reports department and patient incidents to the Respiratory Department manager or supervisor and responds appropriately to code blue and other emergency calls.
