About The Position

In a training capacity and under the close supervision of a Respiratory Therapy Supervisor, administers basic respiratory therapy care to patients. Performs a variety of duties related to the delivery of respiratory department services such as transporting patients, cleaning of supplies and equipment, etc. Participates in quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities. Complies with all appropriate safety and infection control standards. Performs all job duties and responsibilities in a courteous and customer-focused manner according to the Hurley Family Standards of Behavior. Works under the close supervision of a Respiratory Therapy Supervisor or designee who reviews work for conformance with established policies, procedures, and standards.

Requirements

  • Current enrollment in an approved Respiratory Therapy Registry Program with completion of two (2) semesters.
  • Ability to compile, organize, and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written formats.
  • Ability to lift and bend during CPR and to transfer and reposition adult and infant patients.
  • Ability to push equipment, supply carts, cylinders, wheelchairs, gurneys, etc. ranging in weight from 5 lbs. to 400 lbs. or more.
  • Ability to lift equipment, boxes, stock items ranging from 3 lbs. to 60 lbs.
  • Physical ability to perform the required responsibilities and duties.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, visitors, supervisors, and Medical Center staff.

Responsibilities

  • Under supervision of Respiratory Therapy Supervisor, Registered Respiratory Therapist, or preceptor, performs basic respiratory therapy treatments to patients including instruction and administration of oxygen therapy, aerosol and medication delivery, IPPB, ultrasonic treatments, and set up and monitoring.
  • Lifts, turns, moves, and transports patients using wheelchairs, stretchers, etc. and appropriate techniques as instructed/assigned.
  • Cleans, prepares, and stores respiratory therapy supplies and equipment.
  • Notifies Respiratory Therapy Supervisor of supply shortages, defective equipment, etc.
  • Performs variety of tasks related to ongoing operations of Respiratory Therapy Department such as receiving visitors, answering telephones, recording and communicating messages, performing clerical tasks, etc.
  • Demonstrates effective judgment and ability to understand, react completely, and treat (if appropriate) unique needs of patient age groups served.
