About The Position

Under the general supervision of the clinical director (M.D., D.O., or PhD) or designee, this role provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders. The technologist will provide direct patient care in the Sleep Disorders Lab, performing and scoring sleep studies, and participating in all sleep-related clinics. This position also involves providing appropriate respiratory care specific to the pediatric population in accordance with hospital and sleep lab policies and procedures, and communicating findings to physicians as appropriate. Duties may include polysomnography, diagnostic and therapeutic services, patient care, and education.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited AMA approved school of Respiratory Care accredited by the National Board of Respiratory Care
  • CRT - Certified Respiratory Therapist or RRT - Registered Respiratory Therapist
  • Current and valid Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association
  • Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job.

  • Current and valid RRT National Registry license in the state of Nebraska within 1 Year
  • Must be registered in Sleep Technology by The American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM), The National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC), The Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (BPRT) or an equivalent examination accepted by The Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) required within 24 months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Collect, analyze, and integrate patient information to identify and meet patient-specific needs, determining final testing parameters/procedures in conjunction with the ordering physician or clinical director and laboratory protocols.
  • Implement and prepare patient/caregiver education per the plan of care, communicating needs at an understandable level and in a timely manner.
  • Ensure documentation is complete, accurate, and timely, following up to ensure results are obtained and relayed to parents/patients.
  • Obtain accurate information upfront to ensure proper care and billing.
  • Document treatments or procedures performed in the patient’s medical record with accuracy and timeliness.
  • Explain pre-testing, testing, and post-testing procedures to the patient and/or parent.
  • Prepare and calibrate equipment required for testing to ensure proper functioning and make adjustments if necessary.
  • Apply electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards.
  • Perform appropriate physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signals and make adjustments if necessary.
  • Perform positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fitting.
  • Perform sleep studies on two patients on any given night according to accepted published standards.
  • Communicate with the physician for direction on patient care issues at appropriate times.
  • Follow procedural protocols for various sleep studies (e.g., MSLT, MWT, parasomnia studies, PAP, ventilator titration, oxygen titration) to ensure collection of appropriate data.
  • Follow “lights out” procedures to establish and document baseline values.
  • Perform Polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure artifact-free signals and make adjustments if necessary.
  • Document routine observations including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and significant events to facilitate scoring and interpretation.
  • Implement appropriate interventions, including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention (e.g., PAP, oxygen administration).
  • Follow “lights on” procedures to verify integrity of collected data and complete the data collection process.
  • Provide age-specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, and adult patients.
  • Oversee and perform difficult and unusual procedures and therapeutic interventions.
  • Score sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines.
  • Score clinical events (e.g., respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals) according to center-specific protocols.
  • Generate accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data.
  • Complete monthly Inter-Scorer Reliability records through the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
  • Practice risk management and safety precautions.
  • Enter charges accurately and within the identified timeline.
  • Comply with applicable laws, regulations, guidelines, and standards regarding safety and infection control.
  • Perform routine and complex equipment care and maintenance.
  • Evaluate sleep study-related equipment and inventory.
  • Respond to study/participant’s procedural-related inquiries by providing appropriate information.
  • Analyze complex situations and apply policy.
  • Perform physical requirements as described in the Physical Requirements section.
