About The Position

Provides an educational program for identified special education pupils who have academic, neurological and/or cognitive problems which hinder progress in the regular classroom and who are placed in instructional groups on the basis of individual needs, as determined by the pupil’s Individual Education Plan (IEP). The goal is to reduce the handicapping nature of the pupil’s disability and develop student skills so the child can eventually function independently in a regular setting.

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid California teaching credential authorizing teaching services to designated teaching populations.

Responsibilities

  • Provides an appropriate individualized remedial education program which implements an IEP for each pupil in accordance with Federal, State and local regulations and procedures.
  • Provides appropriate physical and psychological environment to establish and reinforce acceptable pupil behavior, attitudes, and social development.
  • Develops student skills with the goal that the child will eventually be able to function independently in a regular setting.
  • Evaluates and monitors pupil progress and makes periodic reports on the achievement and personal adjustment of identified individuals with exceptional needs, in cooperation with the administration, support and teaching staff through the provision of appropriate pupil assessments.
  • Provides consultation to staff members regarding the remedial processes and difficulties involved in instructing these pupils.
  • Coordinates special education services with the regular school programs for each individual with exceptional needs enrolled in the resource specialist program.
  • Confers with parents and professional staff members on each pupil’s progress.
  • Participates in the assessment, planning and identification process for appropriate pupils through established procedure.
  • Serves as a member of the Student Study Team (SST) as required.
  • Maintains accurate attendance and other required records.
  • Attends appropriate site, district and Special Education meetings.
  • Plans and coordinates activities of assigned Special Education staff.
  • Complies with District and school site policies and procedures.
  • Implements Federal, State and local regulations relative to handicapped pupils.
  • Maintains standards of professionalism and abide by the tenets of the State of California “Code of Ethics of the Teaching Profession”.
  • Operates flexibly within the school day.
  • Provides in-service training when needed.
  • Recommends to appropriate staff committee or administrator various books, instructional aids, supplies and equipment which may be ordered for special education.
  • Keeps abreast of curriculum requirements for grades and subjects in all areas studied by pupils.
