About The Position

This specific role, the Shelter Support Line Prevention and Diversion Worker (SSL) /Residential Worker, provides general information, books shelter beds, and offers confidential shelter options to individuals and families who have lost their housing or are at imminent risk of homelessness.

Requirements

  • Completed high school, plus specialized courses of up to six (6) months (Addictions Facilities)
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office 365
  • Comfortable working with, and developing, Spreadsheets using Excel
  • Familiarity with housing supports on PEI
  • Knowledgeable of the regions, counties, and rural areas of PEI
  • More than three months but less than one year of prior related experience
  • Experience with frontline work in a social service setting
  • Universal precautions
  • Immunization for Hepatitis B
  • Vaccination against Tuberculosis
  • Current Certification in First Aid/CPR
  • Criminal Police Investigation Check (CPIC)
  • Non-violent Crisis Intervention training

Responsibilities

  • Answer the SSL phone and complete callbacks
  • Implement diversion strategies to prevent homelessness
  • Accurately fill out intake forms
  • Liaise with referral sources and other external agencies (e.g., child protection services, police, community organizations)
  • Regularly communicate with emergency shelters (daily), housing navigator, landlords, and service providers
  • Complete daily and monthly spreadsheets and reports
  • Make appropriate referrals
  • Liaison with hotel/motels
  • Monitor the activities of the clients/residents and maintain availability for personal, practical and morale support; may include providing safe storage and recording of prescribed medications
  • Accurately record day-to-day happenings using appropriate methods; maintain logbooks and complete occurrence reports
  • Coordinate client care relating to security issues; doing bed checks
  • May carry out inspection/security checks of property and grounds in accordance with policies and procedures
  • Handle the admission, orientation and evaluation of clients’ understanding of rules; ensure ongoing enforcement of policies, which may include client discipline
  • May serve as Receptionist for Shelter
  • May prepare or provide simple meals for clients/residents
  • Provide follow up and supports to clients accessing SSL options and resources
  • Maintain office equipment
  • Ongoing training and continuous learning
  • Perform other duties as assigned
