About The Position

The Mayo Clinic John E Herman Home and Treatment Center is a residential treatment program for adults with serious persistent mental illness (SPMI). The program is organized around functional and vocational recovery. Treatments include group and individual therapy, medication management based on cognitive and behavioral principles, medication management, vocational program, and milieu-based activities to help residents engage in a productive and value-driven life. The Psychiatric Technician is an integral member of the psychiatric residential, hospital-based psych emergency services team and participates in both direct and indirect patient care for adults and children. At the direction of a registered nurse the Psychiatric Technician promotes involvement in the treatment program. Psychiatric Technicians assist residents in various social, clinical, nutritional, and observational activities to ensure optimal patient outcomes and a safe patient milieu. The Psychiatric Technician role plays a crucial role in ongoing safety observation, assessment of the milieu and identification of escalation of concerning behaviors. The Psychiatric Technician plays a key role in leading social activities, games and crafts that promote patients to engage in milieu and practice therapy concepts they are learning within individualized care plans.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • Valid driver’s license, and acceptable driving record as defined by policy.
  • Experience in a psychiatric hospital setting as a mental health or behavioral assistant working with adults.
  • Basic skills in cleaning, cooking, and meal preparation.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations in stressful and ambiguous situations.
  • Basic computer and keyboarding competence with the ability to use Microsoft office suite and /or competency with electronic clinic documentation.
  • Demonstrates ability to multi-task under stressful situations.
  • Demonstrates ability to communicate, collaborate and manage relationships with interdisciplinary members while maintaining patient/family centeredness and safety in a timely, efficient, and equitable manner.
  • Maintains current Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers from one of the following programs: American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and have the ability and skill to drive a car or van.

Nice To Haves

  • Nursing Assistant training or equivalent -OR- completion of 12 college credits preferred.
  • Experience with 24/7 residential programs preferred.
  • Computer experience preferred.

Responsibilities
