About The Position

Student Housing is a self-funded, large and complex campus department consisting of 6 housing communities and 3 support units, with more than 300 staff employees, 300-400 student employees and an annual operating budget of $120 million. Student Housing provides housing for approximately 9,000 undergraduates, graduate students and their families in over 250 buildings and approximately 3.3 million sq. ft. Currently, Student Housing houses 51% of UCI's enrolled students (in conjunction with American Campus Communities, UCI's 3rd party housing partner) with a goal of housing 60% as part of the campus Long Range Development Plan (LRDP). Student Housing also provides maintenance and repair services to student residents.

Requirements

  • Ability to organize, implement, evaluate resident events and activities within a purposeful community development context.
  • Thorough knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • Abilities in project management, problem identification and reasoning skills.
  • Skill in counseling individual students and groups of students of diverse backgrounds regarding personal and academic needs; knowledge of campus resources for referrals.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to interact successfully in a diverse setting.
  • Knowledge of student development theory to the student housing population.
  • Ability to develop, implement and monitor budget, and maintain accurate records of expenditures.
  • Thorough knowledge of Student Affairs / Student Life specialization.
  • Knowledge in diversity and multicultural education.
  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
  • Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
  • Ability to respond in a rational and level-headed manner in a crisis or emergency situation using effective crisis management techniques.
  • Experience administering a student conduct process and skills in interpreting, enforcing and explaining to residents University Policies.
  • Ability to recruit, select, train, supervise and evaluate staff.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Valid California Driver’s license
  • Experience administering a student conduct process and skills in interpreting, enforcing and explaining to residents University Policies.
  • Required to hold a valid drivers license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.
  • Must be able to provide proof of work authorization

Nice To Haves

  • Strong knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
  • Master's degree preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Shares responsibility for after hour emergency and crisis response in a diverse community setting.
  • Assist in the development of community through connecting with residents, supervising student staff, programming, advising groups, managing projects, adjudicating student conduct and administrative duties.
  • Selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of student staff (Resident Advisor and others as applicable).
  • Oversight of programming.
  • Budget management.
  • Counseling and referring students (individually and in groups).
  • Assisting with residence hall classes.
  • Committee work within housing and with other student service offices.
  • Working cooperatively with other campus agencies such as UCI Police Department (UCIPD), Counseling Center, and Health Services.
  • Assist the Associate Director in the development of the overall Residence Life program within student housing.
