About The Position

The Residence Hall Monitor (RSM) position consists of working an 8-hour information desk in the residence halls under the supervision of the Dillard University Police Department. The RSM is charged with ensuring the safety of all residents of a designated hall or apartment area by monitoring and controlling the flow of residents, visitors, staff, and guests in and out of the residence halls. The RSM is responsible for making sure all rules and regulations are followed and assisting with fire drills and investigating false alarms. The RSM must maintain a good working relationship with the Office of Residential Life and student staff members. General work responsibilities include answering the phone, submitting work order requests, and performing other customer service duties. The Gate Monitor position consists of working 8 hours at the campus main entry gate to check IDs of persons attempting to enter the campus after 7:00 PM. If he/she is not a current Dillard faculty, staff, or student, they will not be granted access. The gate monitor is charged with ensuring the safety of the campus by monitoring and controlling the flow of traffic coming onto campus.

Requirements

  • Must be able to work without constant supervision, make decisions, and have good judgment while performing under stress
  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks and projects and prioritize based on department needs
  • Must possess the ability to operate appropriate computer functions
  • Must have the ability to keep concise and accurate records and carry out verbal instructions
  • Must have the ability to write complete and concise reports
  • Must maintain emotional stability and physical condition necessary to perform related duties
  • Must maintain a high level of confidentiality
  • Must have a high level of professional appearance
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Must have and maintain a clean criminal record
  • Must pass a background check performed by Human Resources
  • Must pass a detailed background investigation and drug screen test
  • Must not have any arrests or convictions which prohibit accessing N.C.I.C./LLETS or NOPD M.O.T.I.O.N. computer systems

Nice To Haves

  • Related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience at institutions of higher learning desired
  • Law enforcement or security training preferred, but not required
  • CPR and first aid certification preferred, but not required

Responsibilities

  • Maintain security by becoming familiar with facility, surroundings, and DU residents and guests
  • Secures all exterior and emergency doors
  • Read and become familiar with the administrative procedures and resources contained in the Employee Handbook, Staff Manual, and the Student Handbook
  • Understand and enforce all University and Residence Life policies in a fair and consistent manner (i.e., visitation, smoking, quiet hours, etc.)
  • Prevents losses and damage by reporting irregularities and informing violators of policy and procedures
  • Reports concerns to the Residence Life Coordinator (i.e., maintenance, false alarms, security, facility damages, etc.)
  • Documents any incident on the appropriate forms within 24 hours of occurrence
  • Completes reports by recording observations, information, and occurrences
  • Submits all incident reports in a timely manner
  • Ensures student participation in fire drills/fire alarms
  • Maintains contact with Campus Police in case of an emergency
  • Maintains organization’s stability and reputation by complying with legal requirements
  • Attend department meetings and in-services held by supervisor
  • Attend regularly scheduled one-on-one meetings with supervisor
  • Complete timesheets accurately and timely
  • Serve as resource and referral agent
  • Answer the phone
  • Submit work order requests
  • Perform other customer service duties
  • Check IDs of persons attempting to enter the campus after 7:00 PM
  • Monitor and control the flow of traffic coming onto campus
