About The Position

The Residential Counsellor will plan and implement individualized, goal-centered programs for adults with developmental disabilities within all Lawson Ministries Programs. The Residential Counselor will promote greater independence and strive towards the highest quality of living possible, while fostering a supportive and nurturing environment. This role ensures that the Service User’s physical needs (food, clothing, shelter) are met, including cleaning, meal preparation, and personal care. Additionally, the position involves assisting Service Users with their emotional and psychological needs and participating in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of Person-directed treatment/rehabilitation plans.

Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited post-secondary/college program of two academic years: Developmental Social Worker Diploma or equivalent in Human Services field.
  • Current First Aid & Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation with Defibrillation training required or willingness to obtain upon hiring.
  • Current Non Violent Physical Crisis Intervention Certification (CPI) required or willingness to obtain upon hiring.
  • Provide an original copy of Criminal Records Check (CRC) with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Must have a valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s license and a current Driver’s Abstract.
  • Access to their own vehicle.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience working with adults with developmental disabilities and vulnerable populations.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs.
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and flexibility.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement individualized, goal-centered programs for adults with developmental disabilities.
  • Promote greater independence and the highest quality of living for Service Users.
  • Foster a supportive and nurturing environment and programming.
  • Ensure Service Users' physical needs (food, clothing, shelter) are met, including cleaning, meal preparation, and personal care.
  • Assist Service Users in meeting their emotional and psychological needs.
  • Participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of Person-directed treatment/rehabilitation plans.
  • Maintain working knowledge of person-directed plans, policy, and procedures.
  • Support the meeting of Service Users’ spiritual needs through participation in programming activities.
  • Work cooperatively with residential and day program team members for coordinated approaches.
  • Develop strong therapeutic relationships with Service Users and their families.
  • Accurately record daily logs, shift reports, and incident reports using AIMS software.
  • Maintain accurate filings of assigned Service User documentation (hard copy and electronic).
  • Administer and accurately document medication, and order medication.
  • Ensure the general upkeep, cleanliness, and maintenance of the residence and main office.
  • Assist with any Service User emergencies that may arise during a shift.
  • Schedule required professional appointments for primary clients, prepare necessary documentation, and provide direction to accompanying staff.
  • Transport Service Users to and from specific destinations as required.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the psychological and social dynamics of working with persons with developmental diagnoses and behavioral needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Program Supervisors, Program Directors, or the Executive Director.
