The Residential Care Worker - Relief position at the Toronto Harbourlight - The Homestead Alice M. Walter House aims to provide supervision and support to clients, ensuring safe, effective, and efficient operations of the Homestead.

Requirements

  • Degree or diploma in one of the human services professions
  • Education, experience or equivalent in working with women with addictions and other marginalized women
  • Develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities
  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Crisis/Conflict Management Skills
  • Diversity awareness and appreciation
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member
  • First Aid/CPR Certification
  • Clear CPIC/VSS
  • Computer skills in word processing, email, data entry, EMHWARE
  • Ability to cook for thirty people
  • Food Handlers Certificate
  • Must be supportive of the mission of The Salvation Army
  • Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) less than six (6) months old, with acceptable results to The Salvation Army (cost borne by employee)

Responsibilities

  • Appropriately model healthy life skills and socialization to clients
  • Provide support as needed to clients in residence, as well as clients and former clients by telephone
  • Manage the safety and security of the building after office hours, including alarm system, evacuation, emergency management
  • Manage interpersonal crisis and conflict situations among clients
  • Manage behavior modification strategies with clients (positive and negative consequences, warnings and discharges) in consultation with team as required
  • Train, assign and supervise client chores and work therapy as required
  • Review and complete all required written communication, including log book, communication book, general log, Initial Inquiry Forms, EMHWARE, email reports as necessary
  • Maintain professional and appropriate verbal communication with co-workers, on-call counselors, management, clients and members of the public while on duty
  • Effectively and safely manage distribution of client medications
  • Admit and orient new clients to the residence
  • Answer doors, telephones and accept deliveries as necessary
  • Prepare and serve meals as necessary
  • Perform housekeeping duties as required
  • Participate in team interactions and decision making
  • Process client belongings on discharge
  • Ensure that clients are following guidelines
  • Stock housekeeping supplies as necessary
  • Appropriately manage hazardous items such as cleaning supplies and sharps
  • Supervise client urine screens, breathalyzers as required
  • Be in agreement with and willing to support our Mission Statement and treatment philosophy
  • Maintain a drug and alcohol free lifestyle while on Salvation Army property and on duty
  • Model appropriate dress that reflects a professional office environment
  • Participate in all staff meetings by attendance and participation
  • Participate in regular direct supervision with immediate supervisor and implement improvement in performance as directed
  • Participate in yearly formal evaluation
  • Represent The Salvation Army Homestead in a professional manner at all times
  • Be punctual and work all hours scheduled, advising immediate supervisor when this is not possible
  • Read and adhere to the policies and procedures of The Homestead
  • Participate in staff development as required
  • Work as an effective member of The Homestead team
