About The Position

DeKalb County Government is seeking experienced CDL Drivers for Automated Side Loader (ASL) and Rear Loader opportunities within Solid Waste Management. This classification is safety sensitive, subject to random drug testing in accordance with the County’s Drug & Alcohol Policy. The role involves operating heavy trucks and equipment to collect and transport solid waste along assigned routes, ensuring safe and efficient collection, loading, and dumping of materials. Responsibilities include operating truck-mounted mechanisms, monitoring collection activities for timely route completion, ensuring loads are properly secured, and maintaining a safe work environment for employees, equipment, and the public. Adherence to traffic laws, safety guidelines, and operating procedures is mandatory. The position also requires performing vehicle inspections, basic equipment maintenance, and manual refuse collection as needed.

Requirements

  • One year of experience operating heavy equipment and/or driving and operating heavy trucks.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a valid 12-month DOT Medical Blue Card as a condition of employment for some departments.

Nice To Haves

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Some assignments may require a Class A CDL and/or special endorsements.

Responsibilities

  • Operates rear-loading, automated, semi-automated, and other heavy trucks and equipment to collect and transport solid waste along assigned routes.
  • Positions vehicles for safe and efficient collection, loading, and dumping of materials.
  • Operates truck-mounted mechanisms to collect, secure, and compact solid waste.
  • Monitors collection activities to ensure timely route completion.
  • Ensures loads are properly balanced, covered, secured, and contained.
  • Monitors the work environment to ensure the safety of employees, equipment, and the public.
  • Obeys all traffic laws, safety guidelines, and operating procedures.
  • Performs vehicle inspections and basic equipment maintenance.
  • Performs manual refuse collection and other related duties as required.
