About The Position

The Resident Engineer serves as the primary technical liaison between the company and its key automotive Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) customer in the Spartanburg, SC area. This position serves as the central communication link between the customer's manufacturing plant and the Sales Headquarters in Novi, Michigan, as well as global R&D and manufacturing facilities. The role focuses on ensuring successful product launches and ongoing operational continuity by providing on-site technical support during vehicle builds, trial runs, testing events, and rapid root-cause issue resolution on the factory floor.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Science, or a related engineering field (or equivalent work experience).
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in product design, field application engineering, R&D, or quality engineering within the automotive supply chain.
  • Strong understanding of automotive electrical architectures, specifically CAN and LIN Bus communication protocols, as well as mechanical assembly/access mechanisms.
  • Proficiency with industry-standard vehicle network analysis and diagnostic tools (e.g., Vector CANoe, vFlash).
  • Applied knowledge of engineering failure analysis methods (DFMEA, 8D, or FTA) and the ability to perform under high-pressure manufacturing environments.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with experience presenting technical solutions to internal and external leadership.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior direct experience supporting OEM assembly plant operations in the Spartanburg, SC area or an OEM assembly plant in general.
  • Proficiency with OEM-specific engineering and diagnostic tools (e.g., E-Sys, Tool64).
  • Hands-on experience with door access mechanisms, latch systems, or electro-mechanical vehicle body components.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary quality and technical point of contact at the customer’s manufacturing facility, supporting prototype builds, pre-series runs, and mass production.
  • Assist customer engineering and plant personnel in diagnosing, benchmarking, and resolving vehicle assembly and integration issues.
  • Manage customer expectations while maintaining clear alignment with internal engineering and sales objectives.
  • Investigate, isolate, and troubleshoot complex electro-mechanical, software, and access mechanism issues directly on vehicles or test benches.
  • Participate in detailed root-cause failure analyses (such as DFMEA, FTA, DRBFM) to determine defect origins and implement corrective actions.
  • Perform immediate on-site containment actions to prevent assembly line disruptions, including part exchanges, software/firmware flashing, and coordinating temporary engineering changes.
  • Act as the communication bridge between customer plant teams, internal R&D, and sales management in Novi, MI.
  • Maintain comprehensive technical logs, issue-tracking reports, and quality trend documentation to feed back into internal continuous improvement processes.
  • Translate plant-floor symptoms into actionable technical data for internal design and manufacturing teams.
  • Ensure all on-site activities comply with customer plant safety protocols, state and federal safety regulations, and internal company policies.
  • Track quality metrics, monitor issue resolution progress, and recommend design or process enhancements for future product lifecycles.
  • Perform other related technical or quality support duties as assigned to support customer and operational needs.
