About The Position

Arlington Public Schools (APS) is seeking a Residency Specialist to ensure that students and families served by the district reside within Arlington County, in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. The Specialist will conduct investigations for unconfirmed residency, write and present reports, and support the full range of student registration processes, including enrollment, transfers, and records management. This role provides division-wide support and guidance to school-based registrars and central office staff, particularly in resolving complex residency and registration cases. The Specialist will also assist in the development and implementation of practices and procedures related to residency confirmation and student registration processes, working collaboratively with district leadership, principals, county agencies, and legal counsel to ensure efficient and systematic resolutions.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of applicable laws, rules, and regulations regarding residency requirements.
  • Knowledge of student registration systems, enrollment procedures, and records management.
  • Ability to maintain complex data files and prepare reports.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel for data analysis and reporting.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and complex cases.
  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience totaling four years is required.
  • Four or more years of progressively responsible experience in education, social services, or related fields is required.
  • Experience in education, social services, or law enforcement student registration, residency, or student services is required.

  • Experience supporting registration processes and/or residency investigations is preferred.
  • Bilingual Preferred (Spanish)

Responsibilities

  • Conduct investigations on behalf of the district concerning unconfirmed residency.
  • Compile relevant documents, formulate the official investigative case report, and provide information to appropriate parties.
  • Maintain tracking systems, logs, and documentation.
  • Support division wide student registration processes, including enrollment, withdrawals, transfers, and student record management.
  • Provide guidance and support to school-based and central office registrars on registration procedures, systems, and requirements.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate student records in compliance with state and federal requirements.
  • Serve as a resource for resolving complex residency and registration cases across the division (McKinney Vento, Kinship Care, Affidavits for student Identity).
  • Collaborate with school and central office staff to ensure consistent implementation of procedures.
  • Develop and deliver training for registrars and school staff audiences as needed.
  • Develop, facilitate, and lead professional development for school-based registrars and staff.
  • Support planning, coordination, and continuous improvement of registrar training and onboarding.
  • Uses a computer and modern office suite software (such as MS Office).
  • Uses a computer and modern office suite software (such as MS Office), including advanced Microsoft Excel skills for data analysis, reporting, and tracking.
  • Communicates and interacts effectively with internal and external contacts.
  • Promotes a positive and consistent customer experience for families throughout the registration process.
