About The Position

Augustana University invites applications for the position of Residence Hall Director, a full-time, 12-month, live-in administrative role within the Department of Residence Life. Residence Hall Directors are integral members of the Residence Life team, supporting a holistic and student-centered residential experience grounded in the University’s mission, vision, and core values. This position is responsible for the supervision of one residence hall, for staffing and programmatic needs. Residence halls house 250 to 450 students, depending on location and provide opportunities to work with students in themed communities specific to service, vocation and faith, flexible housing, and first-year students.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated understanding of student development theory and its application in residential settings.
  • Ability to articulate the purpose and value of the residential experience to students, families, and colleagues.
  • Experience with crisis intervention, conflict management, and community engagement.
  • Strong written, verbal, and electronic communication skills.
  • Knowledge of program evaluation and assessment of learning outcomes.
  • Ability to create communities welcoming and belonging.
  • Interacting with students, faculty, staff, and community members from a variety of cultural backgrounds while demonstrating respect for differing perspectives, academic values, and inclusive excellence must be a core value of the successful candidate.
  • Applicants must comply with the Immigration Reform and Control Act and may be required to submit official transcripts upon employment.
  • Finalist candidates must satisfactorily complete a pre-employment background check.

Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise 6–10 undergraduate student staff members.
  • Provide training, performance evaluation, and ongoing development support.
  • Manage processes for check-in/check-out, room changes, key administration, and facility needs reporting.
  • Facilitate roommate mediation and serve as a resource for personal and interpersonal concerns.
  • Maintain visible presence and hold regular office hours.
  • Oversee hall programming initiatives related to academics, wellness, diversity, service, vocation, community development, and leadership.
  • Manage a programming budget effectively.
  • Partner with the Director of Student Conduct regarding student behavior concerns.
  • Serve in the on-call rotation supporting the broader Residential Education program.
  • Assess student needs, provide immediate support, and refer to appropriate campus resources.
  • Receive additional responsibilities based on departmental and institutional needs.
  • Contribute to department-wide initiatives, assessment, and committee work.
  • Represent Residence Life and Student Affairs at campus events and programs.
  • Assist with summer housing, camps, and conference operations.
  • Availability for evening, weekend, and holiday commitments as needed.
