About The Position

This role involves assisting in the operation and maintenance of debris removal and disposal equipment, as well as various maintenance equipment. The position requires performing general maintenance on structures and groundskeeping at AEP Hydro facilities, adhering to safety protocols, and documenting work activities. The operator will also be responsible for equipment inspections, basic repairs, and potentially directing the work of assisting employees.

Requirements

  • High school or GED graduate
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license.
  • Employee shall obtain appropriate licensing as required by federal and/or state law prior to the end of the designated probationary period.
  • Must acquire CDL beginners permit within 60 days.
  • Must complete Virginia Boater Safety course within two (2) weeks of starting position.
  • Must be able to work independently or with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to stand or walk continuously for up to 10 hours.
  • Must have the ability to operate heavy equipment, use motorized equipment and hand tools on both land and water.
  • Develop a thorough working knowledge of the tools and equipment and their use as required in the work and a working knowledge of equipment clearance procedures and the rules, safety practices and procedures applicable to the work.
  • Develop working knowledge of Smith Mountain and Leesville Lake, layout, functions and operation of debris removal/disposal facilities and must have thorough working knowledge of the special phase of operation and work involved in the barge loading, unloading, and disposal equipment.
  • Must have the ability to adapt to changing work environments including, but not limited to hot and cold temperatures.

  • Heavy equipment experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in operation and maintenance of debris removal/disposal equipment including boats, barges, push/tugboats, excavators, loaders, skid steers, tractors, forklifts, debris skimmer, debris shredder, light duty and heavy haul trucks.
  • Assist in operation of various maintenance equipment including power and hand tools such as grinders, saws, chainsaws, mowers, leaf blowers, generators, pumps, compressors, and welders on and off the water.
  • Clean, fuel, perform lubrication, general maintenance and basic repairs on various equipment.
  • Assist in daily equipment inspections prior to use.
  • Assist in lake debris inspections and participate in formulation of work plans.
  • Document and track work activities in the Work Management System.
  • Isolate and tag equipment to be removed from service as per approved AEP Clearance Permit procedures.
  • Perform pick up and deliveries of parts and materials etc. using plant vehicles.
  • Perform general maintenance of structures and grounds keeping work at various AEP Hydro facilities.
  • Perform duties in accordance with Company's safety rules, operating regulations and practices, and report unsafe conditions and practices.
  • Direct the work of employees assigned to assist.
  • Report unsafe conditions and practices and must be able to lead HPI activities and conduct safety meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.
