About The Position

The Reserve Underwriter at Berkley One plays a pivotal role in evaluating and underwriting large account risks, with a strong emphasis on profitable growth and relationship management. This position involves significant decision-making authority and collaboration across multiple teams to ensure high-quality underwriting outcomes. This role will be based in one of our offices: Morristown, NJ Phoenix, AZ Chicago, IL We offer a hybrid work schedule with 4 days in the office; and 1 day remote where it makes sense to do so.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) or equivalent professional experience
  • Minimum 5 years of underwriting experience in high-net-worth personal lines.
  • Deep technical underwriting competency and love to work on large accounts.
  • Deep empathy for both insureds and agents, with a passion for delivering an exceptional brand experience and advocating for customer needs.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to adapt your style to suit different audiences and situations.
  • Naturally inquisitive, always seeking to understand how things work and how they can be improved.
  • Enjoys diving into account details to craft underwriting solutions that align with guidelines, profitability goals, and client needs.
  • Willingness to travel as needed, including overnight trips, and to work flexible hours to support clients across time zones.
  • Demonstrates exceptional proficiency with technology and underwriting tools.

Responsibilities

  • Focus on underwriting large account new business daily and mining the renewal portfolio, leveraging expertise and sound judgment to select and price risks that align with Berkley One’s profitability goals.
  • Partner with risk management to assess exposures and recommend solutions that enhance the overall quality of the risk.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by identifying opportunities for innovation in underwriting practices and organizational priorities.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with a designated group of agents. Act as a trusted advisor by understanding their needs, coaching on solutions, and fostering loyalty to the Berkley One brand.
  • Educate agents on Berkley One’s risk appetite and guide them in applying this knowledge to appropriate risk selection.
  • Use advanced underwriting tools and analytics to monitor portfolio quality and inform individual underwriting decisions.
  • Work closely with Distribution and Marketing teams to co-develop strategies that drive business growth and enhance market presence.
