About The Position

The Reserve Firefighter is an "At-Will, Volunteer" employee who is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the Fire Chief. The Fire Chief may cancel the appointment, with or without cause, at any time without a right of appeal. The Reserve Firefighter is responsible for protecting life and property using skills obtained through experience, education, and training. These skills may be used in a wide variety of tasks including, but not limited to, emergency response, public education, and community involvement. Under general supervision, the Reserve Firefighter will be expected to perform multiple functions using sound judgment and good decision-making skills.

Requirements

  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Possession of and ability to maintain a current valid California Driver's License, Class C, and ability to obtain a firefighter endorsement is a condition of employment.
  • Maintain physical ability and stamina to meet position tasks and responsibilities.
  • Physical abilities must be commensurate with the essential functions of the position.
  • No person shall pose a threat to themselves or to the health and safety of other individuals in the workplace, or to the public they serve.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, county, and District regulations, practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of current basic firefighting methods, principles, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of the Incident Command System.
  • Knowledge of operations and maintenance of tools and equipment used at emergency scenes.
  • Knowledge of types of cleaning methods for various tools and equipment, correct use of cleaning solvents, and manufacturer's or departmental guidelines for cleaning equipment and tools.
  • Knowledge of infectious disease control procedures.
  • Knowledge of emergency radio communication procedures.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and documentation.
  • Knowledge of emergency vehicle maintenance and operation, including all applicable federal and state driving licenses.
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious and effective working relationships with a wide variety of people that include senior management, employees, outside agencies, and the general public.
  • Ability to learn to operate fire and other emergency apparatus and equipment effectively and safely.
  • Ability to learn to analyze fire and other emergency situations accurately and take effective action.
  • Ability to follow directions and orders of superiors quickly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to understand and comply with Metro Fire's policies, rules, regulations, laws, and ordinances pertaining to the position's essential functions.
  • Ability to learn firefighting and other emergency care knowledge, techniques, and skills primarily through classroom instruction and by observing tasks performed.
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations professionally in a calm and collective manner.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with associates and the general public.
  • Skill in the care and use of all pertinent tools and equipment required to provide service to the public.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a full range of firefighting duties in the suppression of structural, wildland, and other types of fires.
  • May be required to drive apparatus.
  • Performs scheduled maintenance of stations, fire apparatus, and related equipment.
  • Responds to alarms as a member of a Reserve fire apparatus crew.
  • Connects and lays fire hose lines.
  • Enters burning areas and structures with charged hose lines.
  • Operates and climbs fire ladders.
  • Participates in the rescue of persons trapped in burning buildings and autos.
  • Renders first aid.
  • Opens up structural impediments that interfere with firefighting operations utilizing various manual and power equipment.
  • Ventilates buildings to relieve smoke, heat, and gases.
  • Participates in a wide range of emergency and rescue activities, including emergency medical services, extrication, heavy rescue, hazardous materials, and others.
  • Operates two-way radios as necessary.
  • Participates in regular training activities and exercises.
  • Assists in making fire inspections and fire prevention activities.
  • Assists in the investigation of fire causes and the preservation of evidence when a fire is of a suspicious origin.
  • Prepares reports and may testify in court as to the findings.
  • Responds to emergency calls as dispatched within the District.
  • Performs firefighting activities including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose, and performing fire combat, containment, rehab, extinguishment, and overhaul.
  • Performs salvage operations including throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris.
  • Writes reports accurately and in a timely manner, documenting incident data, patient assessment, and patient treatment.
  • Operates radio and other communication equipment.
  • Participates in inspections of buildings, hydrants, and pre-planning target hazards.
  • Participates in building, grounds, and equipment maintenance.
  • Inspects, cleans, and maintains fire hoses and equipment.
  • Performs general housekeeping and ground maintenance duties in the fire station.
  • Assists in the preparation and/or presentation of fire prevention programs to the public.
  • Assists in making fire prevention inspections.
  • Presents programs to the public on safety and fire prevention topics.
  • Completes District's minimum required training hours annually.
  • Maintains required certifications in fire and emergency medicine.

Benefits

  • $16.90 per call minimum
  • $16.90 per hour thereafter
  • Paid only during call outs, training or special events
