About The Position

The SAGE WISE project is seeking bilingual research technicians to advance the scientific aims of a recently funded NIH five-year project, which may include a combination of responsibilities related to human research. Job duties will include recruitment, screening, enrollment, data collection on-site at a school-based setting, and in the community with English and Spanish speakers. Duties will also include retention efforts, assistance with developing project materials, reports, and publications. The research technician will participate in translation and interpretation from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English. This individual will play an integral role in conducting research to help young children from low-income families return to in-person learning, which will include implementing garden-based curriculum activities. The candidate will work directly with a predominantly Spanish-speaking population.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma and two-years (2) experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
  • Evidence of being able to speak, write, and read in Spanish/English (bilingual).
  • Experience in working in the community with culturally diverse groups of people.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and techniques of research recruitment, enrollment, and participant confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of research methods, data collection, data entry, data proofing, and analyses.
  • Experience in performing in a professional manner and in collaboration with a variety of individuals.
  • Use of basic math and a calculator.
  • Experience working with Pre-school/Head Start school systems.
  • Experience working with diverse Pre-school/Head Start student populations, including first-generation and low-income.
  • Experience recruiting for research studies.
  • Experience in implementing physically active interventions.
  • Experience providing training.

Responsibilities

  • Plays an integral role in conducting research aimed at recruiting and improving health behaviors in low-income, minority children and families.
  • Performs scientific data collection, data entry, data proofing, and analyses involving routine procedures characterized by moderate use of independent judgement following scientific protocol.
  • Conducts research recruitment, enrollment, and data collection in English and Spanish.
  • Performs translation and interpretation, verbally and in writing, from English to Spanish and vice versa.
  • Travels to research sites and conducts field testing for child motor skills and intervention implementation (mileage reimbursement).
  • Maintains detailed records of data collected and data entered.
  • Organizes data, prepares data for computer input, and records computer output.
  • Conducts library and online searches to find research information on related procedures and techniques that can be used in the laboratory and/or field.
  • Writes summaries of projects, documenting location, findings, and procedures used, and assists in writing reports by conducting literature searches and background research; prepares bibliographies as required.
  • Operates laboratory equipment such as weight scale, stadiometer, and measuring tape.
  • Maintains detailed records of daily laboratory tasks.
  • Inventories and requisitions supplies.
  • Trains students in the operation of equipment and/or in the performance of technical procedures.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Use lab equipment - please specify equipment: Veggiemeter, Tanita scale, Accelerometry, Stadiometer.
  • Use a personal vehicle to travel.
  • Use office equipment including a desktop computer.
  • Use critical thinking to make decisions and/or analyze and report data/results of tests conducted.
  • Conduct lab tests using appropriate equipment and protocols.
  • Deliver presentations to a variety of audiences.
  • Handle petty cash.
  • Initiate confidential correspondence on behalf of the project.
  • Conduct interviews over the phone or in person.
  • Schedule appointments and maintain calendar for project.
  • Supervise staff and/or students.
  • Works under supervision.
  • Work from general instructions on standard job duties and specific directions/instructions on new assignments.
  • Work both independently and within a complex structured team.
  • Able to exercise judgment within generally defined practices & policies to determine appropriate action.
