About The Position

The core duties of this position are to support the applied research program of the OSU Fruit Production Laboratory through operating under general supervision by the program faculty and staff leads. Activities and duties would include establishing, caring for, maintaining, modifying, and harvesting tree fruit, and participating in general applied research activities including data collection and entry (sample collection, preparation, and analysis and data entry). Activities and duties would be completed in offices, laboratories, greenhouses, and orchard plots. Duties would be performed individually and/or as part of a group including members of the program and campus personnel. Performing duties would involve keeping accurate records and maintaining and operating selected equipment common to applied tree fruit research completed in office, laboratory, greenhouse, and orchard settings. Occasional supervision of a part-time Student Research Assistant may also be required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma.
  • Familiarity with fruit crop management and/or vegetable crop management (which can be transferrable to fruit) including using pruning and trellising, nutrient and irrigation management, pest, weed, and disease control, irrigation system setup and management.
  • Familiarity with experimentation.
  • Familiarity with workplace safety practices.
  • Ability to apply principles to solve problems.
  • Ability to help maintain a friendly atmosphere in the work unit.
  • Ability to perform working alone or as a member of a team.
  • Ability to contribute to the successful completion of research studies.
  • Ability to calculate fractions, decimals, and percents.
  • Ability to read, copy and complete routine forms.
  • Ability to gather, collate, and classify samples and information according to established methods.
  • Ability to use common sense and knowledge of the fruit program goals and objectives to carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to show physical fitness including in outdoor agricultural settings and situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to apply what is demonstrated, instructed, taught, and learned.
  • Skill in operating equipment and tools commonly used in office, laboratory, greenhouse and open field settings.
  • Skill in completing routine operations common in applied research office, laboratory, greenhouse and open field settings.
