Research Technician – Surface Chemistry

Sarmal Inc•San Diego, CA
•$72,000 - $85,000•Onsite

About The Position

Sarmal is seeking a Research Technician to support routine batch execution and core analytical measurements for a biosensor device platform's surface chemistry processes. This is a hands-on, execution-focused role — running defined procedures under direct RA/scientist supervision, maintaining careful documentation, and building toward greater independence over time. Suited to candidates with foundational lab experience (academic, co-op, or early industry); strong execution and reliability may open the door to broader involvement in experimental support work as the program progresses. Open to early-career candidates with relevant hands-on lab training; not intended for a fully independent, self-directed hire.

Requirements

  • Hands-on lab experience (academic or industry) with interfacial materials or related wet-chemistry techniques; comfort executing established analytical methods (e.g., contact angle, fluorescence-based assays) with training.
  • Ability to follow detailed written procedures (SOPs, batch records) precisely and consistently.
  • Strong attention to detail and reliability; comfortable following defined test procedures exactly as written in a fast-paced environment.
  • Comfort with structured documentation (batch records, ELN, GDP-style recordkeeping).

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to PE-CVD/CVD or photolithographic patterning a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Execute surface functionalization batch runs (SAM, silane, hydrogel, brush polymer chemistries) per written SOPs/batch records, under direct RA/scientist supervision.
  • Operate the team's core surface characterization methods — fluorescence-based uniformity assays and contact angle — for routine batch checks, with EIS/CV support as trained.
  • Record characterization results (thickness, density, uniformity, charge) accurately and completely for RA/scientist review.
  • Assist with surface deposition/patterning process runs (spin-coating, dip-coating, spray-coating, plasma treatment/activation; exposure to PE-CVD/CVD or photolithographic patterning a plus).
  • Prepare samples and run defined test conditions for DOE test plans as directed by RA/scientist staff.
  • Log data accurately and promptly in lab notebooks/ELN; flag deviations from expected process parameters to RA/scientist staff.
  • Maintain organized inventory of chemistry consumables and reagents used in daily runs.
  • Maintain cleanroom/lab space per site protocols.
  • Work collaboratively with in-house RAs and scientists; follow established procedures precisely and escalate issues rather than resolving independently.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Company-paid life insurance
  • 401(k) retirement plan
  • Generous paid time off
  • Access to additional voluntary benefits, employee perks, and discount programs
