About The Position

The University of Rochester is seeking a Research Technician II to join their General Neurology Unit. This full-time position involves processing human whole blood samples, conducting experiments with daily supervision, and developing independence over time. Strict adherence to protocols is necessary to ensure accuracy in sample processing. Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • 1 year experience performing basic sampling, monitoring or research activities, compiling and collecting data and preparing reports required.
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety requirements and scientific methods required.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Health Science, Biology, Chemistry or other science related field of study preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Previous experience with basic cell culture techniques, handling biological specimen preferred.
  • Prior experience in flow cytometry, ELISA, whole blood processing preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Process human whole blood samples daily using established lab protocols.
  • Maintain paperwork associated with sample processing.
  • Conduct assigned experiments under daily supervision, with increasing independence over time.
  • Strictly adhere to protocols to avoid manual errors in sample processing.
  • Collect blood samples.
  • Isolate Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (PBMCs) via density gradient centrifugation using Ficoll reagent.
  • Cryopreserve PBMCs.
  • Maintain lab safety and cleanliness.
  • Perform routine maintenance on equipment.
  • Fix blood samples using 4% Paraformaldehyde.
  • Process samples for cell staining using intracellular and cell surface markers of inflammation.
  • Acquire stained samples using flow cytometry.
  • Maintain sample processing and storage logs.
  • Analyze flow cytometry data.
  • Run enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) for various plasma proteins.
  • Transfer samples to the central storage facility.
  • Attend monthly project-related meetings.
  • Perform general laboratory duties such as preparing reagents and restocking supplies.
  • Other duties as assigned.
