About The Position

The successful individual will be appointed a Research Support Specialist in the Department of Medicine-Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. The overall responsibilities of this position are maintaining mouse breeding colonies, coordinating and performing experiments with animal models, organoids, and next-generation sequencing. The position will also involve translational and clinical research activities, including processing human biospecimens, coordinating specimen collection, and assisting with patient-oriented research protocols related to inflammatory bowel disease and gastrointestinal disorders. The Research Support Specialist will work independently and as a team member on animal and cell culture models to understand the processes regulating intestinal pathophysiology. The successful candidate will work closely with clinical and laboratory investigators in a multidisciplinary translational research environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (foreign or equivalent) in chemistry, biology, biotechnology, biomedical science or related field.
  • One (1) year full-time work experience directly related to the assigned research area in gastrointestinal diseases, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, or translational biomedical research.
  • Experience in Cellular and molecular biology techniques: RNA and protein isolation, RNA and protein analysis, microscopy.
  • Experience in working with in vitro cultures of mammalian cell lines, PCR and genotyping.
  • Experience with basic laboratory data organization and analysis using Microsoft Office software, GraphPad Prism, or similar analytical software.
  • Experience assisting with translational or clinical research activities, including processing human biospecimens and maintaining research records.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree (foreign or equivalent) in chemistry, biology, biotechnology, or biomedical science.
  • Experience in flow cytometry, reporter and activity assays.
  • Experience with maintenance of mice colonies and genetics of animal models, handling and dissecting of animals (mice).
  • Experience with Immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescent techniques and microscopy using cells and animal tissues.
  • Experience with Laboratory maintenance, including keeping a detailed laboratory notebook, and managing undergraduate students.
  • Experience with microbiome-related techniques, including bacterial culture, DNA extraction, sequencing-based workflows, or analysis of microbial datasets.
  • Experience coordinating collection and processing of human clinical specimens for translational research studies.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting experiments in animal models, including maintaining breeding stocks, genotyping and monitoring health on a regular basis, performing injections, collecting tissues samples and analysis.
  • Cell culture and biochemical techniques such as RNA isolation, real-time RT-PCR, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, western blotting, processing human biospecimens, and assisting with translational research protocols will be used to complement the animal models, organoids, and next-generation sequencing.
  • Literature searches; staying current in the field by reading and discussing the literature and experimental results with the supervisor and PI.
  • Other duties as assigned.
