About The Position

This position serves as a Without Compensation (WOC) Research Statistician within the Office of Research and Development (ORD). The VA Research Program strives to promote Veteran-centered care to improve patient experiences and outcomes across VA healthcare and community settings, and to advance value-driven care by providing Veterans the highest quality care at the lowest financial burden. Please note, there is not pay associated with this position.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
  • Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959
  • Subject to background/security investigation
  • Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP)
  • Participation in the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination program is a requirement for all Veterans Health Administration Health Care Personnel (HCP)
  • Experience in designing, planning, and executing statistical methodologies for large-scale research projects, providing methodological expertise to senior subject matter experts and agency officials.
  • Experience in consulting on statistical theory and application, developing new statistical methods, and directing complex statistical analyses for comprehensive projects.
  • Experience managing major research projects in Veteran health and healthcare delivery, addressing critical gaps in knowledge, and solving complex theoretical and empirical issues with innovative statistical approaches.
  • Degree: that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc.
  • Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
  • The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for conceptualizing, designing, initiating, formulating, planning, executing, and disseminating the statistical methods for a wide range of research projects.
  • Provides methodological expertise as the senior statistician to top level subject matter specialists and agency officials responsible for broad research and operational programs.
  • Advises and consults on a variety of problems involving the theory or application of statistical methods.
  • Originates new statistical methods for projects of a broad and comprehensive nature.
  • Plans, directs, and coordinates a variety of specialized and complex statistical analyses.
  • Oversees and participates in major research projects that investigate important and difficult issues in Veteran health and health care delivery and address key gaps in knowledge.
  • Involves complex theoretical and empirical issues and requires innovation and original efforts at the highest level of sophistication.
