Research Staff, Applied Voice AI

Deepgram•,
•$150,000 - $250,000

About The Position

Deepgram is hiring a Research Staff member for its Applied Voice AI team to address customer challenges in speech and voice AI. The role focuses on identifying limitations in Deepgram’s models, defining measurable improvement targets, designing evaluations, and developing and shipping fixes to production—often within weeks. Potential work includes expanding models to new languages and regions, improving text-to-speech pronunciation, isolating speakers from background noise and crosstalk, providing early access to new voice capabilities, and releasing benchmarks for Voice AI use cases. The successful candidate will own customer problems through measurable production improvement, find effective and fast paths to solutions, and exercise judgment about when results are ready for customers. Work may involve fine-tuning, generating or curating data, and using external models. Deepgram does not require a specific degree; candidates should demonstrate challenging problems solved through projects, shipped systems, or open-source work. Deepgram expects an AI-first approach: team members actively use and experiment with advanced AI tools and integrate them into their everyday work. The company operates at a fast pace, and the work may evolve rapidly; the role suits someone who enjoys experimentation, adaptation, and continual learning.

Requirements

  • Deep experience training, fine-tuning, and evaluating deep learning models.
  • Strong Python and PyTorch skills.
  • A track record of shipping machine learning systems to production.
  • Ability and habit of owning problems end to end and learning what is needed along the way.
  • Good judgment about which problems matter and when a result is ready to ship.
  • Comfort adopting new AI models and tools, experimenting, adapting, and learning continuously.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with speech-to-text, text-to-speech, or voice agents.
  • Experience with distributed training.
  • Published papers, open-source contributions, or public benchmarks.

Responsibilities

  • Identify where Deepgram’s models fall short and set targets for improvement.
  • Design evaluations that determine whether a model has improved and explain why.
  • Curate and generate data and fine-tune models.
  • Build working systems quickly and ship them to production.
  • Own customer problems through measurable improvement in production.
  • Use customer feedback to guide research methodology for new voice capabilities.
