About The Position

The University of Pennsylvania, a world-renowned leader in education, research, and innovation, is seeking a Research Specialist at the B, C, or D level. This role involves extracting metabolites from biological matrices, performing LC/MS metabolomics assays, and conducting data analysis with a high degree of accuracy. Responsibilities will vary based on the level, with higher levels requiring more independent method development, project management, supervision of staff, and contributions to publications. The position is contingent upon favorable funding.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science and 1 to 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required (Research Specialist B).
  • Bachelor of Science and 3 to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required (Research Specialist C).
  • Master of Science and 3 to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required (Research Specialist D).
  • Preparation of biological fluids and tissues for LC/MS metabolomics experiments.
  • Targeted and untargeted LC/MS metabolomics analysis of biological extracts.
  • Analysis of LC/MS metabolomics data.
  • Generation of metabolomics reports.
  • Ordering supplies.
  • Lab organization and maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Extract metabolites from a variety of biological matrices.
  • Perform targeted and untargeted LC/MS metabolomics assays.
  • Carry out data analysis requiring a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Assist the Director with establishing new metabolomics assays.
  • Perform instrument maintenance.
  • Order chemicals and supplies.
  • Maintain laboratory safety.
  • Independently develop new methods with minimal oversight (Research Specialist C & D).
  • Assist the Core Director with project management (Research Specialist C).
  • Assist the Director with the overall operation of the lab (Research Specialist D).
  • Provide training and supervision of lab technicians, undergraduate and graduate students (Research Specialist D).
  • Contribute text and data for journal submissions (Research Specialist D).
  • Participate in meetings with research professors to design metabolomics experiments and analyze data (Research Specialist D).
  • Independently develop new metabolomics assays and make improvements to existing assays (Research Specialist D).
