Vertex Pharmaceuticals is seeking a highly motivated and innovative Research Scientist with expertise in Immunology and Molecular Cell Biology to join our Functional Genomics group in the Human Assays Technology Department. The successful candidate will play a critical role in advancing our drug discovery efforts by designing and executing cutting-edge assays, unraveling disease biology, and uncovering therapeutic mechanisms of action. The ideal candidate will have foundational knowledge in chronic inflammatory disease biology and technical expertise in the molecular biology of immune cell signaling pathways.

Requirements

  • Strong expertise in Immunology and chronic inflammation diseases, with a deep understanding of molecular and cell biology techniques.
  • Proven experience in designing and executing experiments in a laboratory setting.
  • Excellent organizational skills with a commitment to meticulous record-keeping.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a cross-functional and multi-site team environment.
  • Basic computational skills to analyze NGS-based and complex biological data sets with an interest in developing this skill set.
  • Ph.D. (or equivalent degree) in Immunology, Molecular Biology, or a related field with 0-3 years of industry experience.

Responsibilities

  • Design and execute flow cytometry-based experiments for molecular characterization of immune cell composition from primary human tissue samples.
  • Design and execute molecular profiling experiments using spatial transcriptomics, single cell RNA sequencing, and proteomics.
  • Support processing of samples for Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS).
  • Support development for miniaturization and automation of screening assays.
  • Design and execute functional genomics studies for target engagement and mechanism of action studies of therapeutics.
  • Collaborate with Data and Computational Sciences to develop and apply data-driven approaches, including AI/ML, for analyzing complex biological datasets.
  • Maintain rigorous and accurate record-keeping using electronic lab notebooks (ELNs).
  • Analyze and interpret experimental data and effectively communicate results across cross-functional teams.
  • Collaborate with teams across multiple sites to drive research projects forward.

Benefits

  • This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards.
  • Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements.
  • From medical, dental and vision benefits to generous paid time off (including a week-long company shutdown in the Summer and the Winter), educational assistance programs including student loan repayment, a generous commuting subsidy, matching charitable donations, 401(k) and so much more.
