About The Position

Meta Reality Labs Research is developing technologies for augmented, virtual, and mixed reality, including audio, perception science, and other capabilities for future AR glasses and VR headsets. The Reality Labs Research Audio team focuses on creating virtual sounds that are perceptually indistinguishable from reality and redefining human hearing. The Research Scientist Intern will conduct basic and applied research on perception and speech intelligibility, with the goal of addressing problems in spatial audio and/or hearing assistance. The role is suited to candidates with a background in audiology, hearing science, auditory physiology, neuroscience, or hearing-aid/cochlear-implant signal processing, and strong skills in areas such as audiology, speech intelligibility assessment and modeling, speech enhancement, and/or machine learning with signal processing. Internships last 12 to 24 weeks, with start dates throughout the year.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing or in the process of obtaining a PhD in Hearing Science, Neuroscience, Signal Processing, or a similar or related field.
  • At least 1 year of experience with MATLAB, Python, C/C++, or an equivalent programming language.
  • At least 1 year of doctoral-level experience in statistics and/or machine learning.
  • At least 1 year of experience in binaural rendering, spatial hearing, or signal processing.
  • Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment by the time of hire and maintain authorization throughout employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in human auditory spatial and speech perception.
  • Experience developing real-time audio and audio algorithms.
  • A record of significant results, demonstrated through grants, fellowships, patents, or first-authored publications in relevant journals or conferences, such as ICASSP, ARO, NeurIPS, ICML, IEEE MLSP, ASA, or AES.
  • Experience working and communicating cross-functionally in a team environment.
  • Intent to return to a degree program after the internship or co-op.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct basic and applied research on perception and speech intelligibility to address problems in spatial audio and/or hearing assistance.
  • Communicate research agendas, progress, and comprehensive analyses of results.
  • Design and implement novel algorithms to solve audio research problems.
  • Design, implement, and execute experiments to evaluate new audio technologies.
  • Collaborate with researchers across audio and acoustic engineering disciplines.
