Research Scientist in Biology

UVA Health•Charlottesville, VA
•$70,000 - $90,000•Onsite

About The Position

The Campbell Lab at the University of Virginia (UVA) is seeking a research scientist to investigate the neural circuits controlling appetite, metabolism, and heart function through the vagus nerve. The lab utilizes single-cell RNA-seq to define neuronal types, genetic markers, and signaling pathways. They then employ marker-driven genetic tools to map synaptic circuitry and monitor/manipulate neuronal activity in vivo. Current projects involve molecular connectomics for energy balance and heart function, in vivo neuronal activity monitoring, and manipulation of hypothalamic and vagal neuron subtypes. The position is for a creative, self-motivated, and team-oriented staff scientist to help lead these projects. Candidates identifying as under-represented minorities (URMs) are especially encouraged to apply.

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree or master’s degree with significant experience in Neuroscience, Neurobiology, or a related field, or equivalent, by the start date.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following techniques: single-cell RNA-seq; RNA in situ hybridization; confocal microscopy; mouse stereotaxic surgery; optogenetics; fiber photometry.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate neural circuits controlling appetite and metabolism, including those controlling heart function through the vagus nerve.
  • Apply single-cell RNA-seq to define neurons, genetic markers, and signaling pathways.
  • Utilize marker-driven genetic tools to map synaptic circuitry.
  • Monitor and manipulate neuronal activity in vivo.
  • Contribute to projects involving molecular connectomics, in vivo neuronal activity monitoring, and manipulation of hypothalamic and vagal neuron subtypes.
  • Help lead research projects.
