About The Position

The Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene is seeking a qualified candidate to fill a part-time Research Scientist III position. The Research Scientist will support ongoing clinical and health services research projects within the Department of Psychiatry at the New York State Psychiatric Institute. The role will involve a combination of independent and collaborative research activities focused on mental health services, treatment outcomes, and policy-relevant questions. The Research Scientist will contribute to multiple ongoing secondary data analysis projects using large national healthcare datasets focused on tele-mental health, treatment quality, and innovative approaches to evaluating psychiatric care.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and four years of professional research experience in an appropriate field or master's degree in an appropriate field may substitute for one year of experience, or Ph.D. in an appropriate field may substitute for an additional year of experience.
  • Minimum of (5) years of experience conducting independent quantitative data analyses using statistical software (e.g., Stata, R, SAS, or Python)
  • At least (5) or more years of hands-on experience working directly with large-scale administrative or clinical datasets
  • Evidence of peer-reviewed publications, including first-authors or lead-author contributions

Nice To Haves

  • Clinical training in psychiatry or a related mental health field and/or advanced training in quantitative methods relevant to mental health services research
  • Experience integrating clinical or domain knowledge with observational data analysis in mental health or healthcare setting
  • Experience in psychiatric services research, psychiatric epidemiology, or mental health policy
  • Experience conducting secondary data analyses using large administrative healthcare datasets
  • Familiarity with longitudinal data analysis, pharmacoepidemiology, and/or causal inference methods (e.g., propensity score methods, target trial emulation)
  • Record of first-author publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Track record of first-author publications in peer-reviewed journals in psychiatry, epidemiology, or health services research
  • Prior involvement in federally funded research (e.g., NIH training grants or career development awards)
  • Experience with grant writing or preparation of research proposals
  • Experience mentoring trainees or junior staff
  • Familiarity with U.S. mental health care systems, including Medicaid/Medicare or public-sector services
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills

Responsibilities

  • Design, conduct, and manage quantitative research projects related to mental health services, psychiatric epidemiology, and health policy
  • Analyze large administrative, clinical, and/or survey datasets using statistical software (e.g., Stata, R, or similar)
  • Apply longitudinal and causal inference methods to observational data
  • Lead and contribute to manuscript preparation for peer-reviewed publication
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including clinicians, statisticians, and policy researchers
  • Assist with preparation of grant applications and progress reports
  • Present research findings at internal meetings and national conferences
  • Provide mentorship or guidance to trainees (e.g., residents, medical students, or research assistants), as appropriate
  • Contribute to quality improvement or program evaluation initiatives within the institute
  • Perform other related research or administrative duties as assigned
