About The Position

The Research Scientist I is an integral part of Curia’s team, contributing through the synthesis, purification, and identification of intermediates and target compounds. The role requires expertise in the theoretical and practical aspects of organic chemistry and supports Curia, a contract development and manufacturing organization serving pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. The position is based in Buffalo, New York. The scientist synthesizes compounds using literature or in-house procedures, purifies them to an appropriate degree, and analyzes and identifies compounds using modern separation and spectroscopic techniques. The role also involves managing concurrent reactions and multiple projects, completing documentation on time, and conducting laboratory operations safely in accordance with the Chemical Hygiene Plan. The stated pay is $62,353.20 per year. Curia offers benefits including paid training, vacation and holidays, career advancement opportunities, education reimbursement, a 401(k) program with matching contributions, and a learning platform. Benefit options are eligible from the first day of employment; vacation accrual also begins on the first day.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree with a major in chemistry, or equivalent industrial or scientific experience.
  • 0–5 years of industry experience in medicinal chemistry.
  • Must pass a background check.
  • Must pass a drug test.
  • May be required to pass Occupational Health Screening.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to modify reaction conditions to improve yields; designing new or alternate reaction sequences is not normally expected but can enhance performance evaluation.
  • Ability to conduct literature searches for target compounds, related structures, or specific compound and reaction conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Synthesize compounds efficiently using literature or in-house notebook procedures.
  • Purify synthesized chemicals to an appropriate degree using chromatographic, crystallization, and distillation techniques.
  • Analyze and identify compounds using modern separation and spectroscopic techniques, including interpreting TLC, HPLC, polarimetry, IR, and moderately complex NMR spectra.
  • Organize work so that several reactions can run concurrently and use time efficiently to produce target compounds and complete other tasks.
  • Manage workload and time to perform multiple projects effectively and complete necessary paperwork on time.
  • Conduct laboratory operations safely, maintain familiarity with the Chemical Hygiene Plan, and demonstrate safety awareness and safe work practices.
