Research Scientist/Engineer 2, BRaIN Research Laboratory
About The Position
The Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology at the University of Washington is seeking a Research Scientist/Engineer 2 to join the UW BioRepository and Integrated Neuropathology (BRaIN) Research Laboratory. This role will support human brain research from donation to advanced cell and molecular tissue research. The position is full-time, day shift, located at Harborview Medical Center. The BRaIN Research Laboratory is part of a dynamic department known for its diagnostic services, research excellence, and educational programs. The department utilizes state-of-the-art technology and collaborates across multiple UW Medicine facilities and affiliated institutions to advance translational studies in diagnostic laboratory medicine and pathology.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree with coursework in neuroscience, anatomy, biology, other biological sciences or related field.
- Two years of experience as a grossing technician at a surgical pathology laboratory, necropsy lab experience, cadaver lab, forensic background, or experience with biospecimen handling and exposure to blood borne pathogens.
- Neuroanatomy background (performing dissections on human or animal models), or procurement experience (such as organ harvesting), or veterinary technician work.

Responsibilities
- Lead complex procedures for research donor brain procurement, dissection, preservation, and analysis, including leading an on-call team.
- Monitor and direct junior staff to ensure correct procedures are followed.
- Independently dissect and assess key anatomical structures (>90) for histopathologic examination with minimal supervision.
- Prepare, process, and ship specimens/samples accurately under well-defined requirements.
- Provide support for in silico 3D reconstructions of gross brain images and tissue and fluid-based immunoassays.
- Maintain instruments, perform preventative maintenance, and troubleshoot as needed.
- Perform quality control and quality assurance.
- Prepare stock solutions and media, and maintain accurate laboratory inventory records.
- Participate in laboratory projects including tissue clearing and staining for 3D microscopic reconstructions, downstream analytical approaches (solution-phase quantitation, digital image analysis), and human cell culture.
- Organize and maintain databases on research projects.
- Navigate laboratory and pathology computer networks.
- Participate in lab and other meetings, provide progress updates, review work lists, and prioritize work in conjunction with the PI and research team.
- Assist with special projects and research-related duties in an innovative research environment.
- Contribute to maintaining updated protocols and interface with senior research scientists and the PI regarding methods and manuscript preparation.
- Perform research and assist in the development of new procedures.
- Adhere to HIPAA Privacy and CLIA rules when accessing patient health information and clinical materials.
