About The Position

Microbiology has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 1 to join their team. Reporting to the Assistant Professor, the Research Scientist/Engineer 1 will perform research that is focused on understanding antiviral systems as well as antiviral therapeutics and prophylactics. This RSE1 position is research-focused and the expectation is that the candidate will be able to work under limited supervision to complete assigned research tasks and projects, demonstrating the ability to work independently.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a Biological Science or related field and one year of experience of culturing and manipulating Acanthamoeba and their viruses
  • General experience with life sciences laboratory techniques.
  • Experience with bioinformatics analyses and pipelines.
  • Demonstrated ability for attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational and record keeping skills.
  • Ability to work within a team environment.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Experience with chemical mutagens and forward genetic screening.

Nice To Haves

  • One year or more of experience working in basic molecular biology and/or research in antiviral systems.

Responsibilities

  • Managing laboratory inventory, including ordering supplies and reagents.
  • Restock laboratory supplies.
  • Functions as a backup to the senior research staff, receive/store shipments from collaborators/vendors; monitor supply inventory and alert purchasing team when low.
  • Coordinate broadly with team members to prepare equipment/supplies in support of tissue processing/assays.
  • Molecular biology activities: DNA and RNA preparation, cloning, western blotting, genetic library construction, genetic screening, next generation sequencing PCR, and sequencing.
  • Field work: environmental sampling.
  • Cell culture/Virological assays: maintaining cultures of human and protozoa cells, virus infections, plaque assays, fluorescence microscopy.
  • Organize and analyze research data, assist laboratory members with experiments, prepare laboratory reagents, participate in regular laboratory meetings and events and perform related duties as required.
  • Overseeing and training of personnel working on the same project.
  • Other duties as assigned.
