About The Position

The Research Scientist 1 position is within the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL), specifically in the FutureTech Group. The role involves conducting research to assess the pace of progress in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its correlation with economic outcomes, such as job automation. This position is a key part of a multidisciplinary team comprising economists and computer scientists. The scientist will be responsible for planning, executing, and implementing research tasks and projects, requiring independent judgment in selecting and modifying standard techniques. A significant aspect of the role includes developing novel approaches to understand AI progress and its economic implications, with an expectation to conduct and publish original research.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Information Theory, or a closely related field.
  • A minimum of two years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with AI, optimization, and data analysis.
  • Excellent leadership and project management skills.
  • Strong supervisory experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal, relationship-management, and client-service skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide diversity of faculty, staff, students, and external stakeholders.
  • A high level of independent decision-making and judgment.
  • Proven written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Flexibility to attend evening or weekend meetings and events.
  • Ability to travel domestically, and potentially internationally, up to 10% as needed.

  • Planning, conducting, and implementing research tasks and projects.
  • Developing new approaches to understanding the pace of AI progress and its economic implications.
  • Conducting and publishing original research.
  • Evaluating, selecting, and substantially modifying standard techniques.
  • Keeping projects and deliverables on track.
  • Evaluating and revising plans and methods as needed.
  • Mentoring or supervising students and research staff.
  • Promoting collaboration and cooperation.
  • Handling confidential information with discretion.
  • Giving oral presentations and preparing scientific papers.
