About The Position

Tolan is an Embodied Companion: a cute, friendly AI alien that you talk with naturally, like a friend. They have unique preferences and personalities, and over time they form memories about you, your friendship, and your life. Tolan is built by an experienced team with a lot of history together. We previously founded Even, acquired for $300m in 2022. Our engineering team comes from places like Apple, Square, and character.ai. Our design and creative team has won Apple Design Awards and designed products like Facebook and Dropbox. Our investors include the designers and founders behind products like Instagram, Retro, Behance, Vimeo and Notion. We love to work hard, with a high degree of autonomy and ownership. We work together in-person in downtown SF. The role We're hiring someone to bridge our research operations and community support, responsible for keeping our research running smoothly and highlighting the voice of the user for the team. You'll report to our Head of Research. You'll have direct influence on product decisions, talk to our most dedicated users, and translate how people are using the app into actionable data. What a typical day looks like You might start by reviewing overnight feedback from power users, flagging themes and scheduling a focus group for later in the week. Mid-morning, you're updating our AI monitoring tools and coordinating logistics for next week's user research sessions—confirming Zoom links, prepping incentive distribution, updating the participant database. After lunch, you're diving into chat histories, identifying where conversations went well (or poorly), and wrapping the day by drafting a report on a recurring issue you've noticed. Who we're looking for We're looking for someone whose diverse background gives them a unique perspective on human conversation and emotional dynamics. If you've always been the person who notices patterns others miss, the person who your friends turn to for advice on having tricky conversations, or the one who can talk to anyone at a group dinner, you might be a good fit. What matters most:

Requirements

  • Exceptional emotional intelligence. You are exceptional at perspective taking & can understand the emotional intent behind a very short text message.
  • Taste for quality. You have strong intuitions about what makes an interaction helpful vs. hollow, especially in sensitive contexts.
  • Intensely curious. You want to understand the why behind the what.
  • Self-directed, organized, and scrappy. You see what needs doing and do it, and you have the judgement to prioritize.
  • Detail-oriented without getting lost in details. You can manage databases and logistics while keeping the bigger picture in mind.
