About The Position

CancerCare Manitoba is a provincial agency that provides clinical and academic services and leadership for cancer control and the treatment of blood disorders. The Research Nurse, reporting to the Patient Services Manager of the Clinical Trials Unit (CTU), screens potential eligible patients for clinical trial eligibility, ensures the consent/assent process is performed and documented, organizes study-specific treatment plans, and monitors the progress of patients enrolled in clinical trials. The role also involves reviewing new studies for nursing feasibility, participating in patient/family education and counselling, making nursing assessments and interventions per protocol, assisting in patient recruitment and specimen collection, and promoting a culture of research. Nursing staff regularly work with cytotoxic and hazardous medications, with provided PPE and training. The incumbent must be able to travel between sites and work a variable shift.

Requirements

  • Current registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM)
  • Current certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training requirements for this position shall be in accordance with the applicable CCMB policy
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Canadian Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses, and relevant legislations and regulations.
  • Minimum 3 years of oncology experience
  • Proficient with computers, software programs and applications such as MS Windows/ Word/Outlook
  • Must hold a satisfactory employment record
  • Must be able to legally work in Canada

Responsibilities

  • Screens potential eligible CancerCare Manitoba (CCMB) patients/clients for clinical trial eligibility.
  • Ensures that the initial and ongoing consent/assent process is performed and documented.
  • Organizes study-specific treatment plans.
  • Monitors the ongoing progress of adult and/or pediatric patients enrolled in a clinical trial.
  • Reviews potential/pending new studies for nursing feasibility.
  • Participates in patient/family education and counselling.
  • Makes pertinent nursing assessments and appropriate interventions per the study-specific protocol.
  • Participates in the recruitment of study patients.
  • Assists in coordinating and collecting specimens as required by the protocol.
  • Promotes a culture of research within the organization.
