Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a 2-4 year degree program.
  • Animal Science major preferred
  • Excellent organizational skills and independent problem solving
  • Experience using Microsoft Office
  • Ability to use electronic data capture (RFID technology)
  • Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment.
  • Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.
  • Must be able to tolerate and willing to learn and perform the following tasks: euthanasia, castration, vaccinations, piglet processing, ear tagging for identification, taking blood samples and other procedures normal to animal husbandry.

Responsibilities

  • Collecting data and samples as outlined in protocols for research trials.
  • Monitors and cares for animals on research trials.
  • Works daily on research farm; including tagging, weighing and moving pigs of all sizes
  • Collects blood samples and oral fluids
  • Vaccinates animals
  • Implements and follows all protocols for each research trial; including recording all necessary data
  • Performs and masters all methods of data collection; including operating individual scales
  • Responsible for complying with all environmental laws and procedures to which Smithfield Hog Production Division subscribes
  • Reports all environmental issues immediately to their supervisor
  • Reads and understands the company’s emergency notification process and will be responsible for reviewing that policy at their work site
  • Work weekends as scheduled
  • Follows all company animal care, IPS, and biosecurity policies
